Katherine Jean Franklin Ellerbe, 71, of Columbia, passed from this life on Friday, January 3, 2014, at the Haven Nursing Center in Columbia Heights, following an extended illness. She was born March 22, 1943 in Monroe to the union of her parents, Charlie Bruce and Alice Lucy Wall Franklin. Katherine was a 1961 graduate of Columbia High School and went on to further her education at Northeast Louisiana State University (now University of Louisiana at Monroe), obtaining her degree in accounting. During her senior year at Columbia High School, she was honored to represent Louisiana at the national FBLA spelling bee in Washington, D.C., which she won
in 1961. Katherine served as bookkeeper for Donnie Ellerbe Logging, a family business, and also served as manager for The News-Journal, a newspaper published in Columbia. But her pride and joy came as she served as Director of the Northeast Louisiana Chapter of the March of Dimes. One of Katherine’s great loves was that of reading. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. Katherine’s children hosted a time of remembrance and reflection at the home of Dirk and Bridget Ellerbe from noon until 4 p.m. on Sunday, and received friends at Riser Funeral Home in Columbia from 4:30 until 9 p.m. on Sunday. No memorial service is planned at this time. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donnie Ellerbe; her first born infant son; her parents; and eight siblings, Euna Mae Phillips, Wavle Bruce Franklin, Tommy Faye Franklin, Bobby Ruth Franklin, William H. Franklin, Cecil Dale Franklin, Linnie Nell Franklin, and George Melvin Franklin. Survivors include her daughter, Donna Ellerbe Holmes of West Monroe; four sons, Donnie Keith Ellerbe and wife Lorrie, and Kevin Ellerbe and wife Hollie, all of Grayson, Dan Ellerbe and wife Theresa of Columbia, and Dirk Ellerbe and wife Bridget of Riverton; one brother, Sammy J. Franklin of Jena; 11 grandchildren, Ernie Lee Sandidge, Kylie Nugent and husband Shane, Michaela Ellerbe, Kyle Ellerbe, Luke Ellerbe, Justin Girod, Jessica Girod, Nathan Ellerbe, Ross Ellerbe, Victoria Ellerbe and
Madalyn Ellerbe; seven great grandchildren, Harlie Nugent, Ashton Nugent, Levi Nugent, Addison Nugent, Emmalin Nugent, Amelia Belle Nugent, and Hayden Girod; and a host of others, family members including nieces, nephews and friends.
