The Honorable Edwin R. Hughes, 78, of Longview, Texas, and formerly of Jena, passed from this life on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, after a hard battle with cancer. Edwin Rene Hughes was born April 4, 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Thomas R. Hughes and Renee M. Blancq Hughes, who died after childbirth. He was lovingly raised by his father and step-mother, Virginia Rose Leheay Hughes. Edwin graduated from Jesuit High School in New
Orleans in 1954. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in Germany. After his military service ended, he attended Indiana University graduating in 1960 and continued his education at Tulane University Law School, graduating in 1963. He began his legal career in Monroe, and then joined the law firm of Long & Sleeth in Jena, where he practiced law until he was elected District Judge in the 28th Judicial
District in 1972. After 12-years on the bench in Jena, Edwin received an appointment from the Department of Justice as a Federal Immigration Judge to both Oakdale and Dallas, Texas. He concluded his extraordinary
32 year career as a sitting Judge in December 2006. He and his beloved wife, Peggy, then retired in Longview, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Rader Funeral Home in Longview, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thomas R. Hughes; and sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Theron Williams. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Peggy Spinks Hughes, and children, Daniel
Kendrick, Thomas and Tessie Kendrick, Karen Kendrick, Renee and Gary Gilette, Jean Brinkman, Nancy and John Dudley, and John and Silvia Hughes; eight wonderful grandchildren, sister-in-law Doretta Hughes, as well as five nieces and nephews. The family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
