Carl Steven Balius

Carl Steven Balius, 89, of Bellaire, Texas, entered eternal life in Christ on Monday, May 12, 2014. He was a former band director at Jena High School. Although it has been over a year since his death, former band members requested his obituary be published in this newspaper. Carl was born in Biloxi, Mississippi on March 6, 1925, and was baptized at First Methodist Church in Biloxi, where he also married the love of his life, Julia Adele Latil, on August 12, 1951. Carl graduated from Biloxi High School in 1943, served on the battleship USS New Mexico during World War II, earned Bachelor of Music Education (1950) and Master of Music Education (1956) degrees from Louisiana State University, and a Master of Sacred Music degree from Southern Methodist University (1964).

Michael Lee Oliver

Michael Lee Oliver, 33, of Houston, Texas, passed from this life on Saturday, October 24, 2015, in Houston. He was born July 22, 1982 in Rosenburg, Texas. Michael enjoyed playing softball when he wasn’t working at FedEx Freight, and loved spending time with his family. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Brookside Funeral Home in Houston, TX. Interment followed in Brookside Memorial Park in Houston under direction of Brookside Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his father, Milton Oliver; paternal grandparents, Elmo and Nadine Oliver; maternal grandmother, Gladys Robbins; and niece, Haley Guillory. Survivors include his wife, Dawn Oliver; two sons, Kaleb Oliver and Cody Oliver, all of Houston, TX; his mother, Norma Robbins of Jena; grandfather, Arthur Robbins of Jena; three sisters, Tracy Guillory of Spring, TX, Heather Durason of Ball, and Jessica Johnson of Ruston; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Patrick “Petey” Carnahan

Patrick “Petey” Carnahan, 63, of Pollock, passed from this life on Thursday, October 29, 2015, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. He was born July 29, 1952 in Lake Charles to the union of his parents, Columbus and Florra Capps Carnahan. Petey was a meter gauge reader in the oil field. Graveside services were held at 8 a.m., Monday, November 2, in the Zion Cemetery in Georgetown with David Guillot officiating. Interment followed under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Mike Carnahan. Survivors include his son, Kristopher Dale Gast and Renee of Greenville, South Carolina; daughters, Patricia Kay Caranhan of Pineville and Courtney Dian Thomas and Seth of Texarkana, TX; sisters, Betty Marshall of Dearborn, MI and Judi Womack of Pollock; brother, John Carnahan and Caroloin of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Patrick Bailey Snoddy, Marley Snoddy and Kooper Gast.

Dean Johnson

Dean Johnson, 84, of Jena, passed from this life on Saturday, October 31, 2015, at the Bienville Medical Center in Arcadia. She was born March 12, 1931 in Natchez, Mississippi, to the union of her parents, Langston and LeBertha Powell Neal. Dean was a retired legal secretary. She loved to make ceramics and owned and operated D. J. Ceramics and Flower Shop from 1980 until 1995. She loved to visit the nursing homes and help the needy. As a pianist, Dean played many years at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 2, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Byron Norris officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Jena under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert E. Johnson, Jr.; and a son, Robert Neal Johnson.

Paul Denton Smith

Paul Denton Smith, 52, of Olla, passed from this life on Monday, October 26, 2015, at the Winnfield Nursing and Rehab Center in Winnfield. He was born October 26, 1963 in Eureka, California. Paul worked as a chef throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. A private memorial service will be held for Mr. Smith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy McDuff Smith. Survivors include his father, L.C. Smith, Jr. of Olla; brother, Kenneth Ray Smith of Spokane, WA; and sister, Terry Denise Smith of Austin, TX.

Henry Taliaferro, Jr.

Services for Henry Arthur Taliaferro, Jr., (HAT), 77, of Jonesville, were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Harrisonburg, with the Revs. Phillip Caples and Ralph Weber officiating. Interment followed in Harrisonburg Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home/Ferriday. Mr. Taliaferro was born on Feb. 24, 1938, and passed away on Oct. 25, 2015. He was a member of First Baptist Church Harrisonburg. He graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1957, attended Northeast Louisiana University, then went and served our country as a Military Police from 1960-1963. He married Marcyle Carter in 1964, shortly after he began working at Catahoula Bank where he was a loan officer and served as a Board Director for many years. He loved fishing, traveling and spending time with his family and many devoted friends. Henry Arthur was one of a kind, a true gentleman. He loved to pick and had a good sense of humor, about him.

Jewel Modessa Myers

Jewel Modessa Myers, 84, of Olla, passed from this life on Saturday, October 24, 2015. She was born Monday, August 31, 1931 in Joyce to the union of her parents, Jake and Mandie Gorham. Mrs. Myers was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church of Olla and enjoyed fishing, crocheting, canning and visiting with family and friends in addition to staying with her special niece and husband, Mandie and Jay Cloud. She will be remembered as loving everyone and helping others. Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Laverle Shell officiating. Interment followed in Beech Creek Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer Odell Myers, Sr.; grandson, Micah Shane Myers; brothers, Mack Gorham, V. J. Gorham, Woody Gorham, James Gorham, and Jerry C. Gorham; and sisters, Marie Sutton, Marjorie Doyle Lowery and Jane “Polly” Bearden. Survivors include her children, Elmer Myers, Jr.
