Wanda LaRue Paul

Wanda LaRue Paul, 67, of Nebo, passed from this life on Monday, November 2, 2015, at her residence. She was born Monday, February 23, 1948 in Nebo to the union of her parents, Earl Lucious and Della Yule Paul. Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5, at Shady Grove Pentecostal Church of Nebo with the Revs. Curtis Thornton, Kevin Manuel and Charlie Anderson officiating. Interment followed in the Nebo Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Dalton Walker. Survivors include her daughter, Wendy Richmond and husband Bobby of Columbia; brother, Bullet Paul and wife Laverne of Nebo; two sisters, Bettye Hanner and Patsye Breithaupt and husband Walter, all of Nebo; and a grandson, Brandon Richmond. Pallbearers were Greg Paul, Will Stringer, Ceth Hanner, Eli Hanner, Brody Paul, and Justin Hager.

Richard Morley Thornton

Richard Morley Thornton, 63, of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at his residence. He was born Saturday, May 3, 1952 in Monroe. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8, at Jena Church of Christ with Brother John Barker officiating. Arrangements were handled by Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Thornton; and a sister, Carolyn Stewart. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Kathy Andrews Thornton of Jena; father, Conrad Thornton; mother, Jane Strickland Goldman; one daughter, Ruthy Paul of Jena; one son, Chris Thornton of Winnfield; two brothers, Ray Goldman of Waynesboro, MS, and Mitchell Goldman and wife Deanne of Magnolia, AR; one sister, Lynn Shock and husband Chuck of Stuttgart, AR; four grandchildren, Morley Tiner, M’Lynn Tiner, Ethan Thornton, and Jonah Kendrick; and one great granddaughter, Alora Baxter.

Roberta Bowman Washington

Roberta Bowman Washington, 100, of Dallas, Texas, and a lifelong resident of Jena, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 6, 2015, with her family at her side. Roberta was born November 7, 1914, in Jonesville, the daughter of Harry Bowman and Annie Mae Atkins. Services were held September 12, 2015, at Riverside Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas with Rev. Roderick Washington officiating. Interment followed in the Laurel Land Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Israel Washington; two sons, Robert B. Washington and Israel Washington, Jr.; and one daughter, Clara Washington Patterson. Survivors include her daughters, Gladys Washington (Stanford) of Dallas, Martha White and Sara Brewington of Goldsboro, NC, Mary Washington of Jena, and Shirley Atkins of Oakland, CA; 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 20 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Rev. Dr. Dave Mays

Rev. Dr. Dave Mays, 86, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. He was born May 29, 1929 on Llanada Lane in Jonesville to the late Eli Mays, Sr. and Mahala Hollins Mays. His paternal grandparents were the late John Mays and Louvenia Hudson Mays and his maternal grandparents were the late Jack Hollins and Janie Kittling Hollins. Dr. Mays was the second oldest of seven siblings. Dr. Mays enrolled in the Catahoula Parish Training School in 1937, during which time he had to walk to school with his uncles and aunts. He graduated in May 1950 – his class being the first 12th grade class from Catahoula Parish Training School. Later, he entered the United States Army Transportation Force as a truck driver where he would serve his country from 1951-53. With determination to continue his destiny, he enrolled in Southern University A&M College in Baton Rouge to cultivate his studies.

Alda Masters Poole Dufrene

Alda Masters Poole Dufrene, 95, a resident of La- Salle Nursing Home of Jena, passed from this life on Monday, November 2, 2015, at the LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. She was born April 14, 1920 in LaSalle Parish to the union of her parents, Esbon and Neppie Sharp Masters. Mrs. Dufrene was a homemaker. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Glen Roark and Jesse Henderson officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Free Methodist Cemetery in the Antioch Community under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Taylor and husband Glen and Donna Poole and husband Wayne, all of Jena; two sons, Carl Poole of Flatwoods and Dwight Poole and wife Valorie of Jena; one sister, Myra Spears of Jena; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

Carl Steven Balius

Carl Steven Balius, 89, of Bellaire, Texas, entered eternal life in Christ on Monday, May 12, 2014. He was a former band director at Jena High School. Although it has been over a year since his death, former band members requested his obituary be published in this newspaper. Carl was born in Biloxi, Mississippi on March 6, 1925, and was baptized at First Methodist Church in Biloxi, where he also married the love of his life, Julia Adele Latil, on August 12, 1951. Carl graduated from Biloxi High School in 1943, served on the battleship USS New Mexico during World War II, earned Bachelor of Music Education (1950) and Master of Music Education (1956) degrees from Louisiana State University, and a Master of Sacred Music degree from Southern Methodist University (1964).

Michael Lee Oliver

Michael Lee Oliver, 33, of Houston, Texas, passed from this life on Saturday, October 24, 2015, in Houston. He was born July 22, 1982 in Rosenburg, Texas. Michael enjoyed playing softball when he wasn’t working at FedEx Freight, and loved spending time with his family. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Brookside Funeral Home in Houston, TX. Interment followed in Brookside Memorial Park in Houston under direction of Brookside Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his father, Milton Oliver; paternal grandparents, Elmo and Nadine Oliver; maternal grandmother, Gladys Robbins; and niece, Haley Guillory. Survivors include his wife, Dawn Oliver; two sons, Kaleb Oliver and Cody Oliver, all of Houston, TX; his mother, Norma Robbins of Jena; grandfather, Arthur Robbins of Jena; three sisters, Tracy Guillory of Spring, TX, Heather Durason of Ball, and Jessica Johnson of Ruston; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
