Elvin Allbritton

Elvin Allbritton, 71, of Tullos, passed from this life on Friday, January 29, 2016, at the Jena Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jena following an extended illness. He was born August 21, 1944 in Jena to the union of his parents, Dewey Elmer and Velma Rosalie Wright Allbritton. He was the youngest of five children. Elvin served as teacher, principal and supervisor in the LaSalle Parish School System. He enjoyed working with people, especially children. He also helped multiple people receive their GED diploma through LaSalle Correctional Center. He enjoyed outdoor activities; especially hunting and fishing. The Tullos community was near to his heart. He helped secure a grant for the development of the Tullos walking trail and playground. Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, February 1, from the sanctuary of New Union Baptist Church at Tullos with the Revs. Tommy Hollis and Lamar Carpenter officiating.

Linda Sue Brown

Linda Sue Brown, 67, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Sunday, January 24, 2016, at her residence. She was born July 10, 1948 in Jonesville to the union of her parents, Jeddie and Martha Coleman Morris. Linda was a school bus driver for ten years and loved cooking, gardening, planting and raising flowers. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 27, at New Life Pentecostal Church in Manifest with the Revs. David Poole and Clay Hutto officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery of Rhinehart under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jance Morris. Survivors include her husband, Harvey Brown of Jonesville; son, Kenneth Brown of Sabine Pass, TX; daughter, Rhonda Smith of Olla; brothers, Frank Morris of Manifest, J. P.

Rev. Albert Vickers

Rev. Albert R. Vickers, 90, of Jena, passed from this life on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at the LaSalle Nursing Home of Jena. He was born in Sikes on October 25, 1925, to the union of his parents, James Newton and Nettie Hatten Vickers. Rev. Vickers retired from Louisiana Power and Light Company (now Entergy), and served as pastor for a number of churches in the area. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Brother Vickers always had a story to tell when visiting with friends, and he always let you know he was a graduate of the University of Sikes. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Walter Lloyd officiating. Interment followed in the Summerville Baptist Church Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary “Gene” Vickers.

Alson Taylor

Alson Taylor, 86, of Olla, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, in Olla. He was born October 26, 1929 in Crowville to the union of his parents, Walter and Jessie Arnold Taylor. Alson loved hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a retired crane operator in the oilfield drilling industry and proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22, at Olla Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Jonathan Crist and Elsie Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Olla Cemetery in Olla under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena.

Jacqueline M. Greene

Jacqueline M. Greene, 47, of Trout, passed from this life on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Trout. Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22, at the New Life Pentecostal Church of Manifest with the Revs. David Poole and Reid Terry officiating. Interment followed in the Heard Cemetery of Manifest under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. She was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Rider; mother, Annette Adella Greene; and father, Jack Allen Greene. Survivors include her daughter, April Annette Otwell; brothers, Mike Brown and wife Pam, and Harvey Brown and wife Sue; and numerous other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Kim Poole, Kevin Poole, MJ Brown, Derek Smith, Daniel Steven, and Josh Stevens.

Lester Long LaCour

Lester Long LaCour, 82, of Bossier City, passed from this life on Monday, January 18, 2016. He was born June 7, 1933 at Selma to the union of his parents Boyce T. and Mary L. LaCour. Lester graduated from Jena High School, and proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. In later years, hunting and fishing took a “back seat” to crossword puzzles and playing Skip Bo. Lester was a member of Overcoming Faith Church, a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and always put the needs of others first. He will be deeply missed! Services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 22, at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton officiated by Rev. Robert Batchelor and Jeff Sandifer. Interment followed in Hill Crest Memorial Park under direction of Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home of Haughton. He was preceded in death by his son, Duane LaCour; brother, Rev. Laymon LaCour; step-brother, Edward Beckwith; and his parents.

Q. Y. “Tommy” Smith

Q. Y. “Tommy” Smith, 84, of Manifest, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at his residence. Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Oak Grove Cemetery near Manifest with James “Bub” Boyd officiating. Interment followed under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Swayze Smith; daughter, Laurie Stutson and husband Mike; sons, Kyle Smith and wife Tammy and Bradley Smith; grandchildren, Michael W. Stutson, Kayla Youvon Stutson, Jesse Smith, Leslie Smith and Blair Smith; great grandchildren, Emma Rose Stutson, Kylie Breland, Kaitlyn Breland, Christopher Smith, and Caden Smith. Pallbearers were Jesse Smith, Michael Stutson, John Davenport, Coy Smith and “Woody” Smith.

Margarette Anita Thompson

Margarette Anita Thompson, 72, of Jena, was received into Heaven on Saturday, January 16, 2016. She was born Saturday, November 27, 1943 in Jena to the union of her parents, James Louis “Jim” and Louella Margaret Nugent Thompson. Ms. Margarette was one of the longest members/clients of the Jena LADD Center. She started working on April 18, 1983, and continued working up until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, and six brothers. Survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Johnnie Phillips and Byron Gray officiating. Interment followed in the Hurricane Creek Cemetery in the White Sulphur Springs Community under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. Pallbearers were nephews – Tony Thompson, Ray Thompson, Dale Thompson, Doug Thompson, Jim Thompson and Lane Hanner.

Beverly Adcock Gunn

Beverly Adcock Gunn, 67, of Swartz, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. She was born September 16, 1948 in Monticello, Arkansas, to the union of her parents, Louis and Mordre Adcock. Mrs. Gunn worked at CenturyLink for 18 years and received several awards in her department. She was a huge Arkansas Razorback fan and loved to “call them Hogs”. Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 15, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home on Sterlington Road in Monroe with Rev. David McGuffee officiating. Interment followed at 3 p.m. that afternoon at Union Ridge Cemetery in Monticello, AR, under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Jan Hux.

Ernestine “Ernie” Poole

Ernestine “Ernie” Virginia Andrews Poole, 80, of Bryant, Ark., and formerly of Jena, died Thursday, January 14, 2016, in Benton, AR. She was born April 8, 1935, in the Nickel Community to Stantford L. “Buddy” Andrews and Rosa Roark Andrews. Ernie graduated from Jena High School in 1953 and two years later, on Sept. 1, 1955, she married Nathan H. Poole, Jr. of Enterprise, La. She worked as a bank teller at Delta Bank and Trust in Port Sulphur and at the La- Salle State Bank in Jena. She was also a receptionist for Dr. Sanit Sirikul and later worked as the receptionist at First Baptist Church Jena, where she retired in 2002. A dedicated member of First Baptist Church, Ernie organized the food pantry and for over forty years served on the Mission Action Committee, which reached out to those in need in the community and around the world. She taught youth Sunday school and loved to sing in the choir.
