Michael Wayne Callender

Michael Wayne Callender, 65 of Urania, passed from this life on Sunday, August 9, 2015.  He was born September 2, 1949 in Urania, to the union of Houston B. and Ophelia Callender. Mike worked in the plywood  industry for 30-plus years. He enjoyed “Quality  Time” with his family, especially  sitting around on the  porch drinking coffee and sharing stories and hanging  out with his Lil Yorkie, Suzie. Services were held at 9  a.m., Friday, August 14, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Jena, officiated by Rev. Johnnie Phillips, pastor of First Baptist Church in Olla, and Rev. Dean Johnson of Old Pisgah Baptist Church in Marthaville. Burial followed at Urania Cemetery in Urania, under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena.  He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, Walter and Katie Mae Sanders; paternal grandparents, Henry and Alice  Callender.

Lula Mae Brian

Lula Mae Brian, 96, passed from this life on Tuesday,  August 11, 2015, in Beaumont, Texas. She was born July 25,  1919, in Henderson, Texas, to the union of her parents,  Arthur and Lillie Brooks Stokes.  Mrs. Brian was a strong  woman with an even stronger faith. Even though her  life held hard times and struggles, she persevered  and smiled her way through them. Never did she let anything  stand in her way of caring for those she loved.  After the death of her  husband, Cecil Alonzo “Lon” Brian in 2006, she moved to  Beaumont to live with her on. She was a resident of Summer Place Nursing Home for several years. Mr. Brian was from Jena and several family members still reside in the area. A service celebrating her life was held Aug. 15 at Memory Park Cemetery in Longview, Texas, with Rev. Joey Paul officiating. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Elsie Stokes and Bonnie Smith, and her brother, Lloyd Stokes. urvivors include two sons, Robert K.

Cecil Ray Thompson, Sr.

Cecil Ray Thompson, Sr., 82, of Rogers, passed from this life on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at his residence. He was born May 9, 1933 in Rogers to the union of his parents, James Louis and Louella Nugent Thompson. Cecil was a carpenter by trade and served his country in the United States Army. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 11 in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Denver Mc- Broom, Jerry Wilson, and Byron Gray officiating.

John Monsey Smith, Jr.

John Monsey Smith, Jr., also known as “Uncle John” and “Tuxedo John”, 81, of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, August 6, 2015. He was born Monday, April 30, 1934 in Escambia County, Alabama, to the union of John Monsey Smith, Sr. and Era Mae Ellis Smith. A graveside service was held at 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7, at Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, with the Revs. Donald E. “Don” Privett, David Hutchinson and Everette “Shorty” Mayo officiating. Interment followed under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents, and step-father, Rev. Jasper Dee Childress. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Louyette Mildred Nobles Smith; his son, Johnny
Ray Smith of Jena; and a special daughter-in-law, Debra Bryant. Pallbearers were Danny Brown, Jr., Ethan Brown, Seth Davis, John Nobles, Darren Smith, and Johnny Wilkinson.

Richard T. Sharbono

Richard T. Sharbono, 37, of Olla, passed from this life on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. Richard loved fishing, music and swimming. He was a welder and recently completed a semester of college. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 4, at Olla Pentecostal Church, with Rev.. Lamar Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in the Olla Cemetery, Olla under the direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Vivian Ross and Clifford Sharbono, and Mildred and Curtis Brown.

Rev. Willard J. Norris

Rev. Willard J. Norris, 79, of Nebo, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 in Pollock. He was born September 4, 1935 in Rogers to the union of his parents, George B. Norris and Willie Mae Corley Norris. Rev. Norris was saved in 1964 in Houston, Texas. He was a roofer for many years, an avid hunter and a school bus driver for many years for the LaSalle Parish School System. In 1965, he surrendered to the ministry, and served as pastor at Harmony Grove Baptist Church in Winnfield, Victory Baptist Church of Nebo, Bellevue Baptist Church in Jena, Mt. Hermon Baptist Church near Archie, and Bob Baptist Church near Pollock, which he help build and served there for 23-plus years, where he had many friends and felt at home. Services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 30, at Bob Baptist Church with the Revs. Gary Norris, Byron Norris, Todd Norris, and Denver McBroom officiating.

Charles ‘Chuck’ Masoner

Charles “Chuck” Masoner, 87, of Columbia, and a native of Olla, passed from this life on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Citizens Medical Center in Columbia Heights. He was born March 1, 1928 in Olla to the union of his parents, Joseph and Dena Randall Masoner. Chuck served his country in the United States Air Force. He retired from Louisiana Power and Light Company (now Entergy) in 1987. He was a Deacon at Columbia Heights Baptist Church, and was a devout Christian and loved serving the Lord. He was a loving father and husband. Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 1, at Columbia Heights Baptist Church with the Revs. Warren Maxwell and Bruce Mc- Gee officiating. Interment followed in the Welcome Home Cemetery, east of Grayson, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Louise Masoner Turner; and brother, Henry Masoner.

A memorial service for Sister Earnestine Johnson will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the New Evergreen Baptist Church, located at 1190 Church Street in Jena. The Community Choir is requested to provide the song service.

Dave ‘Davy’ Green Hebron III

Dave “Davy” Green Hebron, III, 42, of Jena, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 in New Orleans. He was born March 13, 1973 in Alexandria, to the union of Dave, Jr. and Shirley Colleen McKay Hebron. Davy was a graduate of the Class of 1991 at Jena High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He received a full scholarship to Northeast Louisiana University. He was a server in the restaurant business. Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 4, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Billy Edwards, officiating, and Scott Curry doing the eulogy. Burial followed in the Big Creek Cemetery of Pollock, under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Dave Green, Sr. and Virginia Smith Hebron; maternal grandparents, Elton C. and Nelva Christine Wallace McKay; his beloved, rescued Pit Bull, Kane; sisters-inlaw, Gertrude and Ellie, and brother-in-law, Seamus.
