Frances Nan Dowdy

Frances Nan Walker Dowdy, 82, of Trout, and formerly of Bentley, passed from this life on Thursday, June 23, 2016. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 25, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Ball with her eulogy by DeAnn Collins-Durham. Interment followed under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Alexandria. Her loving and patriotic husband, Colonel Derrell Dowdy; her loving parents, Charles and Lucille Davis Walker, and her loyal brother, Charles Hickman Walker, preceded her in death. She is survived by the daughter she never had, DeAnn Collins-Durham. Memorial contributions may be sent to Oak Grove Cemetery, 6286 Highway 8, Bentley, Louisiana 71407.

Arlene Poole

Arlene Poole, 67, of Aimwell, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. She was born March 17, 1949, in Jena, to the union of her parents, Shelby and Flora Elouise Taylor Tradewell. Mrs. Poole was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and loved being a grandmother. She was a member of the Aimwell Pentecostal Church. Services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 25, at the Aimwell Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Kirk Mayo, Cody Mayo and Lance Stock-man officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Aimwell under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Jean Sikes and Kathy Tradewell. Survivors include her husband, Michael Poole of Jena; daughters, Christa Ryan and Chlea Turner, both of Jena; sister, Shelby Ruth Stockman of Lake Charles; aunt, Ida Mae Stockman; grandchildren, Payton Ryan, Gabriel Ryan and Oliver Turner.

Billie Jean Belgard

Billie Jean Belgard, 77, of Deville, passed from this life on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at her residence. She was born November 24, 1938 to the union of her parents, Lemmie and Isabelle Thompson. Mrs. Belgard was a member of New Hope Free Methodist Church, Deville where she served the Lord in various children ministries. Billie and Harvey were married for 61 years, raised five children in the church, and taught them the love of singing together as a family. In 1957, Billie appeared on the LA Hay Ride. Billie and Harvey placed in the top 10 on the National Grand Ole Opry Pet Milk Contest in 1959 with a song Harvey wrote, “Too Young Too Know”. She loved her children and grandchildren as they were the apple of her eye and they will miss her dearly but her memory will forever be cherished in their hearts. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 26, at New Hope Free Methodist Church in Deville with the Revs. Emitte Belgard and Mike Marbutt officiating.

Marie Mae Book

Marie Mae Book, 90, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at The Columns Community Care Center in Jonesville. She was born October 13, 1925 in Larto to the union of her parents, Alvie Lavere and Katie Elizabeth Sanders Parker. Mrs. Book was a homemaker. Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 23, at Larto Apostolic Church in Larto with the Revs. Daniel Jordan and Jack Knapp officiating. Interment followed in the Nichols Cemetery in Larto under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cary C. Book; a son, Gary Gene Book; sister, Myra P. Ricks; and four brothers, Benny Parker, Zoyle Parker, Avie Parker and Ralph Parker. Survivors include her daughter, Glenda Cooper of Jonesville; sons, Petie Book and Clois Book, both of Larto, and Cary Book of Jonesville; sister, Grace Book of Larto; brother, Claude Book of Summit, MS; seven grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Gay Ramona Baker

Gay Ramona Baker, 84, of Winnfield, passed from this life on Monday, June 20, 2016. She was born Saturday, December 12, 1931 in Winnfield to the union of her parents, Finus Worsham, Sr. and Velva Daige Worsham. Services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 23, at the chapel of Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield with Rev. John Holland officiating. Interment followed in the Garden of Memories in Winnfield under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Robert E. Baker. Survivors include one daughter, Judy Baker Jordan and husband Ronnie of Jena; one son, Robbie Baker and wife Donna of Natchitoches; brother, Robert Worsham and wife Vivian of St.

Ilean Andrews

Ilean Andrews, 79, of Rayville, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, in Rayville. She was born August 10, 1936 in DeQueen, Arkansas to the union of her parents, J. A. and Pearl Miller. Mrs. Andrews taught at Jena High School for five years in the late 1960’s when her husband was head football coach at the school. Memorial services are pending at this time and will be held under direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home of Rayville. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Leo Dan Andrews of Rayville; children, Leo Dan Andrews, Jr. and wife Jana of Ft. Collins, CO, and Brenda Spicer and husband Donald of Baton Rouge; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Shelby Faye Sommers

Shelby Faye Sommers, 75, of Pollock, passed from this life on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. She was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church and Immaculate Heart Catholic Church. Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 13, in the chapel  f Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Pineville with Father Ricky Gremillion officiating. Interment followed in the Bradford Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Lera Jenkins Deville; infant son, Shannon Kyle Orr; and brother, Kenneth Deville. Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Robert A. Sommers; son, Tommy Wayne Orr; daughters, Pamela Sue Ryder, and Tammy Alanna Orr; sister, Lane Bodie; brother, David Earl Deville; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Devin Orr, Luke Ryder, Blake Dillard, Gage LaCoste, Ken Deville and Kirk Deville.

Georgia T. Whitehead

Georgia T. Whitehead, 77, of Columbia, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born January 4, 1939 at Rosefield to the union of her parents, Eber Shelf Whitehead and Naomi Beatrice Poole Whitehead. Mrs. Whitehead was a member of the Baptist Faith. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 10, at the Antioch Cemetery near Summerville. Interment followed under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and by her brother, Glen Roark. Survivors include her children, son, Tommy Phillips of Columbia; two daughters, Shelah Nevitt of Minden, and Vicki Froust of Columbia; two sisters, Gwen Roark of Olla and Kathrine Stamper of Clarrence; seven grandchildren, Billy McClure, Amy Fryar Bradley, Eber McClure, Justin Phillips, Ruby McClure Calhoun, Jesse McClure, and Zachary Phillips; 14 great-grandchildren; and her companion, Roger Williams.

Katie Floy Spinks

Katie Floy Spinks, 94, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Friday, June 10, 2016, in Ferriday. She was born Wednesday, March 29, 1922 in Whitehall to the union of her parents, Howard Neville Coon and Mittie Cass Taylor Coon. Mrs. Spinks was a member of Parhams Baptist Church. Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, June 13, at Parhams Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Ganey officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Cemetery near Rhinehart under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hartwell Spinks; two daughters, Infant Daughter and Velma Holland; granddaughter, Patricia Stangle; great-grandson, Tucker Cowgill; two brothers, Marvin Coon and Sylbert Coon; and son-in-law, Bill Pugh. Survivors include two sons, Phillip Spinks and wife Joyce of Lismore, and J. H.

Linda Young-Simmond

Linda Marie Young-Simmond, 49, of Marietta, Georgia, was granted her angel wings on Sunday, June 5, 2016, following a brief illness. She was born the second of seven children on September 5, 1966 in Detroit, MI, to the union of her parents, Pastor Jimmy and Sylvia Young, now residents of Jena. At a young age, she accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Williams Memorial Baptist Church. Linda graduated from Cooley High School with a college prep diploma in 1984. She began her college career at Northwestern University in Natchitoches and later transferred to Oakland University in Michigan. She was awarded an Associate of Arts degree from the University of Phoenix in 2011. In 2015, she received the Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services Management. In 1996, she married her best friend, Michael Simmond and the couple was blessed with two children, Mykah Leigh and Michael Lee.
