Mary Virginia Townsend

Mary Virginia Townsend, 90, of Harrisonburg, passed from this life on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Plantation Oaks Nursing Home in Wisner. She was born Jan. 20, 1924 in Harrisonburg to the union of Clarence and Leslie
Jones Coker. Mrs. Townsend was a homemaker. Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, at Rosin Creek Pentecostal Church with the Revs. A. J. Kimball, David Bailey and Ernie Reeves officiating. Interment followed in the Siloam Cemetery in Aimwell under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. She was preceded in death by her husband, Al B. Townsend; son, A. W. Townsend; daughter, Marie Edwards; and her parents.

Josephine Elizabeth Breland

Josephine Elizabeth Breland, 89, of Jena, passed from this life on Monday, January 19, 2015, at Hardtner Medical Center in Urania. She was born September 17, 1925 in Poplarville, Mississippi, to the union of her parents, Monroe and Nettie Smith Breland. Mrs. Breland was a homemaker. Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Magnolia Baptist Church near Nebo with Rev. Mark Breland officiating. Interment followed in the

Sue M. Hoffman Crick

Sue Crick, 81, of Pineville, and a former resident of Jena, completed her journey here on earth on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, and is now resting in the loving arms of Jesus. A beloved wife, mother,  and grandmother, Sue was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl C. Hoffman, Jr. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Pineville, and the Kairos Prison Ministry. Services honoring her life were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Pineville with Dr. Steve Fowler and Dr. Patrick Willis officiating. Interment followed in the Greenwood Memorial Park in Pineville under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of

James Watson Lindsey

James Watson Lindsey, 84, died Friday, January 9, 2015, at Cornerstone Village South in Lafayette.  Born in Shongaloo in 1930, his family moved to Olla in 1940 where he would meet and eventually marry the love of his life, Frances Elliott. In his early years, he helped out in his dad’s barbershop shining shoes. After graduating from Urania High School in 1947, he attended LSU on a baseball and basketball scholarship where he lettered in both sports for three years and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He joined the Air Force during the Korean War, married Frances and moved to Ent Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO, where he served as an Intelligence Officer. After separating from the Air Force as a First Lieutenant, he returned to Baton Rouge where he taught and coached at Woodlawn High School and earned a master’s degree in Education from

Michelle Cherie Newman

Michelle Cherie Newman, 41, of Jena, passed from this life on Tuesday, January 6, 2015. A homemaker, Michelle was born January 15, 1973  in Urania. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be missed.
Memorial services were held Saturday, January 10, at Whitehall United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Joey Paul officiating. She was preceded in death by her father, Garland  Newman, and uncle, Harland Newman.
Survivors include her companion, John Wright; her mother, Shirley Newman; grandparents, LaVel and Faye Masters; three children, Brook Keene, Hunter Cupid, and Montana  Stowe; one grandchild, Kahlyn Faye Keene; and three brothers, Paul Newman, Mark Newman, and Matthew Newman.

Saundra Gail Sanders Smith

Saundra Gail Sanders Smith, 68, of Jena, was received into Heaven on Friday, January 16, 2015. She was born Friday, October 18, 1946 in Jena to the union of William Clifford and Vivian Alberta Creel Sanders. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Dominick Di- Carlo officiating. A private burial will follow in the Jena Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service on Thursday. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband of 24 years, Larry Joe Smith. Survivors include her son, William Eric Smith and wife Amanda Louise of St. Francisville; daughter, Melissa Lynnette Smith of Jena; and four grandchildren, Kristine Lawrence, Katelyn Lawrence, Amelia Smith, and William Smith

Margery Travis Hensley Stewart

Margery Travis Hensley Stewart, 91, of Jena, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 15, 2015. She was born May 9, 1923 in Shreveport to the  union of her parents, Ruby Scott Ogden and Franklin  Alexander Hensley. Mrs. Stewart married Harold Rube Stewart on November  9, 1945. She was a graduate of Bellhaven College with a degree in elementary education. She taught school for 30 years in Texas, Mississippi,
and Louisiana. She retired from teaching while at Jena Elementary School. Margery was a kind and loving person who loved her family, friends and all the children who entered her classroom throughout the 30 years she taught. Her sense of humor always put a smile upon the heart of anyone who knew her. Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with Rev.
