Mamie Myrtle Simon

Mamie Myrtle Simon, 91, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Sunday, May 25, 2014. She was born September 3, 1922 in Jonesville to the union of Laura Renfro Davis and Luther Duncan “Gee” Davis. Services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, at the First Baptist Church in Jonesville with the Revs. Lloyd Trisler and Gary Norris officiating. Interment followed in the Jena Cemetery under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville.

Lillie Mae Bradford Breithaupt

Lillie Mae Bradford Breithaupt, 82, of Jena, was received into Heaven on Friday, May 30, 2014. She was a pharmacy clerk/cashier and a member of Nolley Memorial Methodist Church of Jena. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 3, at the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with the Revs. Daniel Hixon and Amanda Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in the Nolley Memorial Cemetery under direction of Kinner and 
Stevens, Inc. of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Monroe and Maude Estelle James Bradford; three brothers,  James “Pete” Bradford, H. R. “Biggy” Bradford, and Charles L. Bradford; and three sisters, Bonnie Smith, Jessie Smith, and Marietta Germany. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Claude Kenneth Breithaupt of Jena; two daughters, Kathy Bye Marsh of Glendale, AZ and Khristi Albright of Thonotosassa, FL;

Woodrow Myres Duke

Woodrow Myres Duke, 72, of Rayville, passed from this life on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at the Rayville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. He was born April 27, 1942 in New Orleans to the
union of his parents, Stuart Myers Duke and Opal Lucille Wilson Duke. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, at the Olla Cemetery in Olla with Rev. Chad Tibbs officiating. Interment followed under
direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. He is survived by five sisters, Peggy Hale of Monroe, Linda Smith of Jena, Doris Inez Judice, Lettie Irene Duke and Priscilla Ruth Dearmon, all of Houston, TX; and a brother, Tom  ClydeDuke of Shreveport.

A few weeks ago I accompanied some of my children and grandchildren, along with some friends, to the spring edition of the Angola Prison Rodeo – a rodeo unlike any that can be found anywhere except maybe in another prison.

Charles R. “Chuck” Weeks

Charles Roland “Chuck” Weeks, 34, of Jena, and a native of Calvin, entered eternal rest on Thursday, May 22, 2014, in a Shreveport hospital following a brief illness. He was born October 19, 1979 and raised in the Village
of Calvin, located in Winn Parish. Since 2011, Chuck has resided in Jena, where he was employed by the law firm of Wilson and Wilson. Chuck earned his Juris Doctorate from Southern University Law Center in Baton
Rouge. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. While attending NSU, he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Catholic Student Organization. Chuck’s formative education was received from Calvin High School where he graduated in 1997. Clariece Coon Windham, 77, of the Belah Community, passed from this life on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at the LaSalle Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was born July 26, 1936 in Jena to the union  of her parents, James Monroe and Thelma Pearl Corley Coon. Mrs. Windham was a homemaker. Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 23, from the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Jimmy Keene officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. Survivors include her husband, Dale R. Windham of Belah; three sons, Scotty D. Windham, Sr., Lynn W. Windham, and Jeff Windham,
all of Belah; one sister, Opal Coon of Arp, Texas; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Scotty Windham, Jr., James Windham, Josh Windham, Manley Poole, Luke Windham, and Timothy McEvoy

Jessie David Cox

Jessie David Cox, 65, of Tullos, passed from this life on Saturday, May 24, 2014. He was born June 18, 1948 in Tullos to the union of his parents, Jesse and Ruby Cox. Mr. Cox was a retired logger and a proud veteran of
the U.S. Army having served in the Vietnam conflict. He was a Purple Heart recipient. Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, at the Cox-Guin Cemetery with Rev. Bobby McGuire officiating. Esther Marie Phillips

Esther Marie Phillips, 89, of Jena, passed from this life on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at LaSalle General Hospital in Jena. She was born June 12, 1924 in Voth, Texas to the union of her parents, William Thomas and Cordelia Page Young. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith. She was also a fanatic fan of all sports and loved to watch the Jena Giants, LSU  and the New Orleans Saintsand she also enjoyed playing any kind of card games. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, from the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Johnnie Phillips and Mickey Hudnall officiating. Interment will follow in the Pollock Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. Visitation was held at the funeral home, Tuesday, May 27, 2014 and will continue Wednesday, May 28 from 8  a.m. until time of services. She is preceded in death
