Gardner sentenced to long prison termJHS

A 67-year-old Good Pine man was sentenced to serve 40-years at hard labor after entering a guilty plea to a charge of manslaughter in 28th Judicial District Court last Thursday, according to LaSalle District Attorney J. Reed Walters.

On Thursday, February 22, 2018, four days before jury selection was to begin, Melvin L. Gardner entered a guilty plea to the charge of manslaughter in the death of Jamie Bates. The crime occurred on March 17, 2017 in the Good Pine Community, just west of Jena.
