Kindergarteners Hope Langley and Hope Mullican toast marshmallows to make smores as part of the activities in Jennifer Smith’s class for the Scholastic Summer LitCamp at Olla Elementary. The camp ran from May 21 to June 15 and, according to Scholastic, is a breakthrough summer literacy program that combines innovative, research-based reading and writing lessons with an engaging and interactive summer camp approach. Each of the classrooms were decorated with camping paraphernalia from lanterns and tents to fake fires and backpacks and some of the activities involved camping. Over 200 parish students participated in the camp, which was taught at two locations – OES and Jena Elementary, for students in grades Kindergarten to fifth grade.
