Velma Sue Brooks, 98, of Jena, passed from this life on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the LaSalle Nursing Home of Jena.

She was born September 17, 1920 in Jena to the union of her parents, John Marvin Allen and Susie Roberts Allen.

Mrs. Sue was a member of East Jena Baptist Church, where she taught adult women’s Sunday School. During her years of employment, she worked at Belden, Taylor’s Department Store, Hayes Lumber Company and the LADD Center in Jena. She was also a seamstress.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at East Jena Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Phillips and Bobby McGee officiating.

Interment followed in Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orrin J. Brooks; her parents; son, Joffree Brooks, Jr.; grandson, Mickey Joiner; three brothers, Tommy Allen, Dwight Allen, and Ed Allen; six sisters, Mott Taylor, Inez Coleman, Minnie Lou Manchester, Ava Morgan, Ruth Owens and Jerry Williams.

Those left to cherish in her memory include her daughters, Gwen Brooks Bradley and husband Robert of Harrisonburg, and Elaine Joiner and husband Leroy of Jena; six grandchildren, Slick Joiner, Jimmy Joiner, John Joiner, Brook Glen, Brad Bradley, Brant Bradley; 13 great grandchildren, Zack, Braxton, Brooks, Cassidy, Bethany, Roan, Trae, Lindsey, Judah, Ali, Audrey, Asher and Myra.

Pallbearers were Orrin “Slick” Joiner, Jimmy Joiner, John Joiner, Brad Bradley, Brant Bradley, and Travis Glen.
