Much work went into creating E-911 system

LaSalle Parish’s 911 emergency service, one of the most well known local services, is offered by one of the parish’s lesser-known entities – the LaSalle Parish Communications District.

The district was created in July 1996 when the LaSalle Parish Police Jury approved its creation and appointed a seven-member board. In 1997, Ann Breland was hired as the 9-1-1 Administrator and began the massive undertaking of mapping all parish roads and structures and assigning each one a number. La-Salle Parish was the sixth from last in the state to establish a communications district.

“We’re better known as the 911 office,” Breland said. “When the district was formed I think everyone probably thought it would just be a flip of a switch in the telephone office for 9-1-1, but there is so much we do that people don’t know about then and now.”
