Prominent Jena leader succumbs

The Jena community and LaSalle Parish lost a prominent businessman, leader and cattle farmer with the death of William Bohman “W.B.” McCartney, Sr. last Saturday, November 14, 2020, when he was called to Heaven.

Mr. Bo, as he was better known, was born December 29, 1922, to the union of Will and Lottie Holloway McCartney. He would have been 98 later this year. He was born on a dairy farm in Urania and had many fond memories of milking, delivering, and selling milk for 12½-cents a quart. When asked how people paid 12½-cents, his reply was always, “Oh, that didn’t really matter. Nobody ever paid us in money anyway.”

After his schooling, he eventually went to work in the local oilfields, clearing locations with crosscut saws and mule teams. He worked for Hunt Oil, making .80 cents an hour until the war was over and the men returning from the war were all given their jobs back.
