School Board updated on high-speed internet effort

State Representative Gabe Firment, District 20, addressed members of the LaSalle Parish School Board during their regular February meeting on Monday night of last week, catching them up on efforts to get highspeed broadband internet service in the area.

“We are working to help speed up getting the service in the area,” Firment said. “LaSalle and Catahoula parishes are way behind on securing this vital service.”

He noted that the Federal Communications Commission announced late last year that the Commission’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund Phase I auction was held and contracts let to provide the service for 332,000 rural citizens living in Louisiana.

In Louisiana, the auction allocated $342,207,315.20 in support to expand broadband to 175,692 underserved homes and businesses over the next 10 years.
