A plan to save Social Security

By Cal Thomas

It is no secret that what the major media seem to care most about is radically different from what concerns average Americans. While the inside the Beltway crowd continues to focus on alleged collusion between President Trump and Russia, real concerns like the future of Social Security are ignored.

The Social Security Board of Trustees, a six-member panel who serve the federal government by offering a short-term and long-range forecast on the health of the Social Security program, has issued a new report, which says that while the retirement program will be “cash flow positive” through 2021, it is still in line to run out of money unless taxes are raised, or benefits are substantially reduced.

Who said, “You can’t go home again?”

By Sammy J. Franklin

There is an old saying, “you can’t go home, again!” But a couple of Sundays ago, I found this not to be true. I returned home and found some old friends, made some new ones, and was truly blessed by the day’s activities.

You see, when I was 12 and 13 years old, we lived about two miles from the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, which is about 8 miles west of Columbia just off LA 8. My mother carried us three children still at home – me; Katherine, age 10; and George, age 7 – to church at Mt. Pleasant.

Global warming swindle

Reprinted from March 15, 2007– ten years ago)

By Thomas Sowell

Britain’s Channel 4 has produced a devastating documentary titled “The Great Global Warming Swindle.” It has apparently not been broadcast by any of the networks in the United States. But, fortunately, it is available on the Internet.

Distinguished scientists specializing in climate and climate-related fields talk in plain English and present readily understood graphs showing what a crock the current global warming hysteria is.

Bridge mends feud between brothers

By Sammy J. Franklin

A faithful reader sent me the following story the other day. It has a very valuable lesson of life and I wanted to share it with my readers.

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side-by-side, sharing machinery and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch.

Child marriage in America

By Morgan Tarpley Smith

This writer cannot even imagine being married at age 24, much less 14 and subjected to a forced arranged marriage. It’s unfathomable, but for many young women – even in the U.S. – this is a reality. Here is one woman’s unforgettable story of her life as a child bride.

“On the morning of October 19, 1983, 14-year-old Trevicia Williams’ goal was to land the role of Annie in the school play. Over 32 years later, she remembers these details so well because it turned out to be the day she got married. Trevicia exited her Houston-based high school, hands filled with textbooks, and walked to her mother’s car. She got in the backseat as her mother turned around and said, ‘You’re getting married today.’

Every business, industry important

By Sammy F. Franklin

This week is the time each year when officials and citizens pause to give thanks for all the businesses and industries we have in LaSalle Parish. Every business and industry, small or large, is important to the economical well being of the parish.

The staff at the Times-Signal has been quite busy for several weeks now preparing this edition of your hometown newspaper as a special salute to all businesses and industries for being a vital part of our parish.

Rediscovering America

By Craig Shirley

This piece was co-authored by Craig Shirley and Scott Mauer.

Some years ago an angry and frustrated taxpayer flew his private plane into the Internal Revenue Service building in Texas. Most liberals commentators wrung their hands over the act but failed to ask, “Why?” What did the IRS do to so infuriate this taxpayer into taking his own life to make a political statement? During the American Revolution, this would have been considered an act of courage and monuments would have been made to the man. After all, the Framers believed man was more important than institutions. But now it seems like Americans, mostly on the left, forgot what America should be.

New immigrants nothing like the old

By Sammy J. Franklin

One of our faithful readers and supporter forwarded me an email the other day which talks about the immigrants of old, and the new brand of immigrants now entering the United States of America.

Included in the email was a letter written by Rosemary La- Bonte to the editors of a California newspaper in response to an article written by Ernie Lujan, who suggested we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the immigrants of today aren’t being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry over the years.

Why the left needs to stop

By Kevin McCullough

Has anybody had enough yet?

They are almost as numerous to keep up with as the number of attacks ISIS related terrorists have launched during the season of Ramadan in 2017.

Left leaning outlet after person after celebrity after elitist wants either Trump, his supporters, or his party’s congressional reps dead. Dead dead... they want them deadest of all the deads.

How stupid are we as Americans

By Sammy J. Franklin

The Muslim wars started in the 7th Century and lasted through the 17th Century. Many will contend it never stopped; the facts below are historically correct.

That is why many of us choke when we hear someone say we will defeat or contain these Islamic terrorists in a few years, or even “30 years” as has been stated.
