Cyclists ride across America

Pass through LaSalle last Thursday

Some 16 bicyclists and their support vehicles arrived in LaSalle Parish last Thursday, completing 2,800 miles of their 3,600-mile trip across the United States for a very worthy cause.

The Fuller Center Bicycle Adventure is a ride each year by volunteers to raise money and awareness for the nonprofit Fuller Center for Housing – an affordable housing nonprofit founded in 2005 by Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Millard Fuller.

Foodapalooza Event in LaSalle Parish

Fresh Central, a program of the Central Louisiana Economic Development Alliance (CLEDA), partnered with the Live Lively LaSalle! Alliance and the Olla Town Square Farmers Market to host Positively Local: An Interim Foodapalooza Event in LaSalle Parish last week.

Positively Local featured skill-building workshops, a locally sourced catered lunch, a tour of local food and community projects in the parish and other activities for anyone interested in learning how to support strong and vibrant communities. The event was funded by a Healthy Behaviors Program Grant from The Rapides Foundation.

Summer is a good time for landscape planning

Landscapes are dynamic creations that are always changing. Plants grow larger, new plants are added along the way, plants die and even trees may be lost in storms. Over the years, a landscape can change radically from its original look.

How your family uses the landscape also changes over time. Kids grow up with no longer a need for a play area. As gardeners grow older, they often have to change a landscape to make it less labor intensive.

The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Max and Peggy Knapp of Vidalia and Clint and Charlotte Johnson of Delhi.

Back-2-School drive underway

In coordination with A.P.P.L.E.S. for needy children in La- Salle Parish, the La- Salle Parish Ministerial Alliance is sponsoring a “Back 2 School Drive” for school supplies.

Items to be accepted, new or like new, include: tennis shoes, any size/sex; clothing, any size/sex; new socks, any size/sex; and basic school supplies.

The early years

I guess most people remember the time they spent in kindergarten. Not much was expected of you and there were always lots of cookies. Line up, go this way, go that way and nap time. That’s all you needed to know to get by.

When my grandmother broke her leg and could no longer watch me I had to go to kindergarten. My mother knew everybody in Alexandria and had found a nice little kindergarten for me. She would drop me off in the morning then pick me up after work. It was boring but the girls there were real nice and I especially liked the cookies.

Very Special Summer Camp at CCC

The fourth annual Very Special Summer Camp for students with special needs, hosted by the Centennial Cultural Center (CCC) in Olla, was held last week at the center and the Dixie Center’s courtyard.

The camp hosted students from around the parish and included many activities such as painting, games, crafts and more. Those helping with the camp range from special education teachers and paraprofessionals to parents, local youth and CCC employees, board members and volunteers.

Adriann Leigh Holley

Madison, Emmalee and Hunter Holley are proud to announce the birth of their baby sister, Adriann Leigh Holley.

Adriann arrived on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at the Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Alexandria, weighing 6-pounds 10-ounces and measuring 19¾-inches in length.
