Fall garden workshop series starts Sept. 30

The LSU AgCenter and the Tangipahoa Parish Master Gardeners Association have scheduled a fall garden workshop series on Sept. 30, Oct. 28 and Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon at the AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station. Each workshop will cover topics from fall vegetable gardening tips, container gardening ideas, Louisiana Super Plants for fall, winter planting for pollinators and bees, monarchs and milkweeds and ending with native trees for Louisiana, according to LSU AgCenter agent Whitney Wallace.

Olla Pinewood Garden Club met September 10

On Thursday, September 10, 2015, the Pinewood Garden club met at the Centennial Cultural Center in Olla for their monthly meeting. Refreshments were served by hostesses Ruby Moody and Karlene Taylor prior to the business meeting. President Moody called the meeting to order. The Collect and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the members.

Dutch Carmichael Vandenberg

Michael and Kelsie Miller Vandenberg of Tacoma, Washington, are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Dutch Carmichael Vandenberg. He was born July 13, 2015, at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, weighing 5-pounds 13-ounces, and measuring 19-inches in length. Maternal grandparents are Kim D. and Angie Poole of Trout, and Jason and Lindsay Sanford of Nashville, TN. Maternal great-grandparents include Phyllis Pennington of West Monroe; Larry and Renee Deville of West Monroe; Keith and Pam Sanford of West Monroe; Don and Sharon McCandlish of Leander, TX; and Randy and Gayla Miller of Epps.

Breanna Nicole Walker

Zaylee Paige Walker is excited to announce the birth of her baby sister, Breanna Nicole Walker. Breanna was born at 7:12 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2015, at the Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Alexandria. She weighed 7-pounds 1½-ounces and measured 19¾-inches in length. Proud parents are William and Brittney Walker of Jena.

Krysta Martin and Chris Vogt will become united in marriage on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at Oakland Farm and Ranch in Tomball, Texas. Krysta is the daughter of Ken and Lori Martin of Spring, Texas, formerly of Mooringsport, LA. She is the granddaughter of “Hammer” and Judy Nottingham of Oil City, LA and Dickey and Brenda Martin of Mooringsport, LA; and the great granddaughter of the late Joe and Jack Francis.

Chelsea Edwards of Columbia and Jesse Ingle of Jena are pleased to announce their engagement and approaching marriage. The bride-elect is the daughter of Misty Hatten and Ricky Cagle, both of Columbia. Her maternal grandparents are Nancy Hatten and Billy Ray Hatten, and paternal grandmother is Betty Cagle, all of Columbia. Chelsea graduated from Caldwell Parish High School in 2013 and is presently attending the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and is employed by Hayes Lumber Company in Jena.

The Busy Bees Garden Club

The Busy Bees Garden Club members hosted Ralph Calhoun, executive director of Biedenharn Museum and Gardens in Monroe, as their guest speaker for the August meeting. The topic of his presentation was “Plants of the Bible,” which included a beautiful slideshow and informative  arration. Hostess of the meeting was Stephanie McDowell and it was held in the home of Pert and Kelly McDowell. After the meeting, a tour was given of the historic 1936 American Colonial style home, built by William Felix Calhoun and Zadie Boatner Calhoun. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Cagle of Harrisonburg, are pleased to announce the engagement   nd approaching marriage of their daughter, Brandee LeAnna Cagle to Ty Kevin Tullos. The bride elect is thedaughter of Mark and Teresa Cagle and the granddaughter of Elbert and Shirley Ainsworth of Enterprise and the late Kenneth Denny, and the late Wayne and Linda Cagle of Sandy Lake. Brandee is a 2013 graduate of Harrisonburg High School. She is studying nursing and plans to graduate in May.

50th Anniversary

The children of Larry and Elaine Grimm of Nebo would like to extend a special invitation to all family and friends to a reception to honor the couple’s Golden (50th) Wedding Anniversary on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at Nebo Baptist Church.  The couple met in Woodville, TX. and after a short courtship, were married on August 28, 1965 at Harmony Baptist Church, Woodville, TX. Larry and Elaine make their home in Nebo.
