“Empowering Education” tour with country music artist plans stop in Jena

CMT has announced the eight colleges that will participate in its first ever statewide “Empowering Education” tour with country artist and Louisiana native, Courtney Cole.

Cole named the colleges earlier on social media, confirming plans to return to her home state in the spring with free concerts at eight community and technical colleges. The tour with Cole is part of a multi-faceted partnership between CMT, Louisiana Community and Technical Colleges System (LCTCS) and Louisiana Calling that aims to increase the number of work-ready residents in the state.

Annual Tales on the Trails

Mardi Gras crewes, pumpkins and motorcycles were only a few of the subjects that area children recently learned about at the fourth annual Tales on the Trails. The free event is sponsored by the LaSalle Parish Republican Women to promote literacy. It featured stations manned by various local organizations such as the Busy Bees Garden Club as well as the LaSalle Parish School System’s Special Education Department, East Jena Baptist Church and more.

Dozens of children took part in the activities and had stories read to them at each of the stations. Each child received up to two books each from the bookstore if they visited at least six stations.

Recently honored outstanding Jena High School students with coveted awards. The 2017 Honesty and Integrity awards were presented to junior class members – Kaleigh Leanne Smith, daughter of Ralph and Rachel Smith and Ashley and Chad Brown; Maggie Suzanne Engles, daughter of Brent and Melissa Engles; and Charles Raymond Phillips, son of Raymond and Ginger Phillips. JHS senior Jacob Tanner Chandler, son of Sheila Chandler and the late Denny Chandler, was recipient of the 2017 Patriotism Award.

Natalee Jean Stapleton

Ashton, Cutler and Aubrey are pleased to announce the birth of their baby sister, Natalee Jean Stapleton.

Natalee was born on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. She weighed 8-pounds and measured 20¾-inches in length.

WWII heroism medal coming home

A World War II heroism medal awarded to a sailor born in Good Pine is being returned to Jena for a special ceremony on Saturday, November 18, 2017, some 72 years after the sailor was declared missing in action.

Todd Creekman, Captain, U.S. Navy (Retired), Executive Director Emeritus, Naval Historical Foundation, has been working with Jena Mayor LaDawn Edwards, for a number of months trying to locate any relatives of the sailor, Navy Ensign Lee Roy McDonnell.

Pumpkins Ready for Harvest…

Seven-year-old Gracie Marks is shown with pumpkins she grew by herself in her grandparent’s garden near Nebo. The pumpkins are ripe and ready for harvest just in time for fall decorating and Halloween. Gracie is a 2nd grader at Jena Elementary School, in the class of Melanie Tradewell.

Cohen Asher Barber

Joe and Jessica Barber of Trout are pleased to announce the birth of their first child, Cohen Asher Barber.

Cohen was born at 7:13 p.m., Sunday, September 24, 2017, at the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. He weighed 7-pounds 4-ounces and measured 20½-inches in length.

Serena Juarez was crowned Queen of the 2017 homecoming festivities at LaSalle High School by Principal Kara Masling during the homecoming program last Friday. Queen Serena, daughter of Barbara and Jose Juarez, presided over her Court during the homecoming celebration throughout the day at LHS.
