School Board OK’s payment of supplements

The June meeting of the LaSalle Parish School Board was short and relatively quiet, as members moved through a 13-item agenda and then went into an executive session to discuss litigations. One important item on the agenda approved by the board was to authorize payment of the June sales tax supplement as follows: degreed personnel (position requires a 4-year degree) in the amount of $4,933.14, and non-degreed personnel (position does not require a 4-year degree), in the amount of $3,453.14.

The Jena Town Council

The Jena Town Council has approved a proposal for the construction of the Third Street Plaza, to be paid for with funds from a $1-million DOTD Transportation Enhancement Grant, which was approved two years ago. The Plaza would start at the Jena Town Square and proceed south to Pine Street, and include a trail and a traffic lane on both sides, and parking for about 78 cars down the middle of the Plaza

Jena native and NFL Defensive

Jena native and NFL Defensive Tackle for the Washington Redskins (formerly of the Dallas Cowboys) will be in Jena on Saturday to hold the Inaugural Jason Hatcher 7-on-7 Championship Tournament, which will feature area high school football teams. Hatcher recently signed to play for the Washington Redskins after spending eight seasons with the Dallas Cowboysfrom 2006-2013.

Students and teachers across the parish completed the academic year last week and are now set to enjoy summer break until school resumes in August

Two Memorial Day programs are slated

Two Memorial Day programs are planned this weekend to honor the memory of fallen soldiers from this area and from throughout the nation. The first program will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 25, at the Centennial Cultural Center in downtown Olla. A short program will be held and flags will be distributed to place on the graves of veterans in area cemeteries.
