Audit reveals Jena in sound financial shape

The audit for the year ending December 31, 2014, reveals the town of Jena is in very sound financial condition, as the mayor and members of the Town Council learned during the regular July meeting held Tuesday night of last week. Wes Gore, CPA, with the  auditing firm of Silas Simmons, LLC of Natchez, Mississippi,met with the council  and mayor to go over the contents of the latest town audit.

Child Nutrition Programs at schools in LaSalle Parish racked up with awards during the annual School Nutrition Association of Louisiana’s annual conference held in Baton Rouge in June. Plaques to the top three schools in the parish were awarded at the July meeting of the LaSalle Parish School Board held Monday night of last week.

David Moore announces as candidate for Sheriff

David Moore officially announced this week that he is a candidate for Sheriff of La- Salle Parish at the fall election. In making his announcement, he issued the following statement to voters of the parish: “Citizens of LaSalle Parish, times are changing. Because  of all the changes taking place in our day-to-day lives, law enforcement cannot operate as it has in the past. Law Enforcement must change to keep up with society and the ever increasing criminal element.

Representative Steve Pylant ask re-election

District 20 State Representative Steve Pylant (R-Winnsboro) will be a candidate for re-election in the October 24th primary. His district covers all of Franklin and Caldwell Parishes, along with portions of Catahoula, LaSalle and Tensas. Rep. Pylant released the following statement regarding his candidacy: “The last four years in the Louisiana Legislature have been a learning experience for me. After serving as the Sheriff of Franklin Parish for 16 years, I discovered that serving in the House of Representatives was a much different proposition than serving as a parish sheriff. State politics was a different world from where I had been.

Unemployment rate in parish up in May

The unemployment rate for LaSalle Parish continued its climb in May reaching 7.4 percent for the first time in years, according to figures just released by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. LaSalle Parish tied in five other parishes for the number 28th spot in the state, with 27 parishes having lower jobless rates for the month. For several years, LaSalle Parish ranked among the top four or five in the state with the lowest jobless rate.

Toney Edwards seeks Catahoula Sheriff post

Toney Edwards has announced that he will be a candidate at the fall election for Sheriff of Catahoula Parish. In making his announcement, Edwards issued the following statement to Catahoula Parish voters: “I was born and reared in Catahoula, with Harrisonburg being my hometown. I have three children, Thad, Constance, and Jordan. I also have two grandsons, Shawn and Hunter.

Largest construction project in area underway at Harrisonburg

The largest construction project within a six-parish area is currently underway at Harrisonburg as work continues on the new LA 8 high-rise bridge over the Ouachita River, being built at a cost of $36.8 million. The project is the largest of any project in the district including Caldwell, Franklin, Tensas, LaSalle, Catahoula and Concordia Parishes.

Voters will decide four amendments at October election

In what will be a noticeable change of pace, voters will only have to read through four proposed constitutional amendments on the Oct. 24 ballot, including two that would institute substantive changes to the way transportation projects are funded. There were 14 amendments on the fall 2014 ballot, leading to voters complaining about information overload and good government groups accusing lawmakers of abusing the process.
