Rev. Pete Nolan

Rev. Garlon R. “Pete” Nolan, 96, of Jena, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 in his residence. He was born Thursday, December 8, 1921 in Farmerville, to the union of Art and Lula Kilcrease Nolan. Rev. Nolan was an ordained Baptist minister and served as pastor of churches in the area. Services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 19, at Temple Baptist Church in Jena with Rev. Jimmy Keene officiating. Interment followed in the Crossroads Cemetery in Farmerville under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Hollie Gene Nolan; second wife Nelda Russell Nolan; son, Roger Dale Nolan; and daughter, Nelda Allen. He is survived by his wife Georgia Etheridge Nolan of Jena; a son, Ken Nolan and wife Jan of Jena; daughter, Janet Smith and husband Hayward of Zwolle; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren

Mary Jane George

Ron Laird, 52, of Kelly, passed from   life on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at his residence in Kelly. He was born April 25, 1965 in Port Lavaca, Texas, to the union of Ronnie and Hazel Laird. Ron was a member of Kelly Baptist Church. He loved traveling with his family, and also enjoyed duck hunting and roping. He was Past Master of the Charles F. Buck 260 Masonic Lodge in Urania, and was a member of the Monroe Scottish Right and a member of the Monroe Barak Shriners. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18, at Olla First Baptist Church with the Revs. Greg Dunn and Scott Fletcher officiating. Masonic services were conducted at graveside, and interment followed in the Roberts Cemetery of Kelly under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Doris and Stick Laird, and Ida and Chelsie Hudson.

Mary Jane George

Mary Jane Davis George, 94, passed from this life on Monday, February 12, 2018 in Jena. She was born May 16, 1923 in Clarks to the union of her parents, Andrew Davis and Mary Annie McBroom Davis. Mary was a faithful Christian woman. She talked to God each day and didn’t stop until her Alzheimer’s caused her to forget how. She loved her family and wanted only the best for each one. That’s what we do. Always honor your momma because too soon you’ll be in our place. With heavy hearts we give her back to God, but we thank Him for giving us such a beautiful soul to share our lives with. Homegoing services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Springhill Baptist Church, west of Kelly, with Revs. Todd Whittington and Elvis Price officiating. Interment followed in the Roberts Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Edgar George; her brother, Marshall Davis; and her parents.

George Thomas Terral

George Thomas Terral, 70, of Jena, passed from this life on Saturday, February 10, 2018, in Monroe. He was born Friday, November 14, 1947 in Jena, to the union of Frank Terral and Bea Cox Terral. An avid sportsman, the only thing he loved more than duck hunting was his family, especially bragging about his grandchildren. Services were held Monday, Feb. 12, at Temple Baptist Church in Jena with Rev. Johnnie Phillips officiating. Interment followed in the Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Martin Terral.

John Collinsworth Knight

John Collinsworth Knight, 82, of Olla, passed from this life on Monday, February 5, 2018, at the Hardtner Medical Center in Urania following a brief illness. He was born February 14, 1935 in Olla to the union of his parents, George Washington Knight, II, and Nora Chrapp Manchester Knight. John was a member of the Chickasaw Free Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening and he loved reading his Louis Lamour western books and having coffee on Sundays. Services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with the Revs. Greg Dunn and Aaron Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in the Chickasaw Cemetery, west of Olla, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joel Knight; a sister, Georgia Lee Bass; and two brothers, Oscar Knight and Jerry Knight. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bettie E.

Jacky DeFrance King

Jacky DeFrance King, 84, of Olla, passed from this life on Thursday, February 8, 2018, at the Jena Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jena, following an extended illness. He was born May 31, 1933 in Winn Parish to the union of his parents, Samuel De- France King and Clara Lee Jenkins King. Jacky served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. In high school, Jacky was a star baseball pitcher for Olla Standard High School in 1949 and at LaSalle High School in 1951. Both of these years, Jacky led his teams to State Championships. He was a member of the Pine Hill Baptist Church. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 11, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla. Interment followed in the Beech Creek Cemetery, west of Olla in Winn Parish, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat Gough King; his parents; and his brother, Sammy Joe King.

Joan Ellis Jones

Joan Ellis Jones, 72, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in Jonesville. She was born August 28, 1945 in Morganza to the union of her parents, Ernest Clarence Ellis and Mary Mott Ellis. Joan was a resident of Jonesville and a member of Sandy Lake Pentecostal Church. Services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, at Sandy Lake Pentecostal Church in the Sandy Lake Community of Catahoula Parish with Rev. Joel Ford officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery in the Belah Community of LaSalle Parish under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William “Casey” Jones; son, Jimmy “Ernie” Jones; six brothers, Leon Ellis, Lawrence Ellis, Chester Ellis, Gene Ellis, Lindon Ellis, and Alfonzo Ellis; and four sisters, Betty Champion, Ida Lee Wiley, Adell Paul, and Hellen Fontenot.

Dale Rickey Johnson

Dale Rickey “Peter Rabbit” Johnson, 60, passed from this life on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. He was born on October 15, 1957 in Jonesville to the late Elisha and Elsie Johnson. At an early age, he was baptized at the New Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. T. A. Baker, Sr. He attended Jonesville Consolidated School in Jonesville. Dale was a phenomenal mechanic and enjoyed working on cars and trucks. He will be affectionately missed by all who knew him because of his laughter and humorous ways. A celebration of his life was held at 12-noon on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Antioch Baptist Church of Jena with Rev. Brian L. Moran officiating. Interment followed in the Webster Cemetery of Good Pine under direction of Gayden Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Rev. Ernest Johnson, Sr., Elisha Johnson, Jr., Eddie Johnson, and Willie Johnson.

Michael C. Duncan

Michael C. Duncan, 53, of Jena, and formerly of Livingston, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, after being struck by a vehicle on US 71 near LA Hwy 3170 in Pineville. Michael was an easy going person whose passion was helping people. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody. Michael enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him. Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 3, at Rush Funeral Home in Pineville with Rev. Roger Toney officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Pineville under direction of Rush Funeral Home of Pineville. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Duncan of Jena.

David Willis Batson

David Willis Batson, 69, of Olla, passed from this life on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born February 8, 1949 to the union of his parents, Rev. Sidney Willis Batson and Marjorie Millard Holland Batson. David was a retired employee of the Louisiana Forestry Commission. He was also responsible for the paper delivery of the Alexandria Town Talk and the Monroe News Star for many years. David was a friend to all and always had a wonderful smile when you met him. He will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. Memorial services will be held at a later date and will be announced by Riser Funeral Home of Olla.
