Tommie Cockerham

Tommie Snody Cockerham, 77, of Kelly, and a native of Jena, passed from this life on Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Haven Nursing Center in Columbia Heights.

She was born June 14, 1939 in Jena to the union of her parents, Silbert and Stella Riser Snody.

Tommie was a devoted wife and mother who was a member of Olla First Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano and being outdoors with her flowers and watching the birds. She had many friends whom she loved and they loved her.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 19, from the sanctuary of Springhill Baptist Church of Grayson with the Revs. Johnnie Phillips and Bruce Weatherford officiating.

Interment followed in the Roberts Cemetery of Grayson under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rev. Troy Cockerham; daughter, Kristi Cockerham; brother, Emeric Snody; and sister, Clara Penney.

Garland Twiner

Garland Twiner, 78, of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, March 9, 2017, in Jena. He was born February 26, 1939 in Jena to the union of his parents, Elzie Red and Mildred Taylor Twiner. Garland was an ordained Baptist minister and served as pastor at Selma Baptist Church as well as other churches for 15 years before he retired in 2012. He was an insurance agent in Jena. Garland served his country in the United States Air Force, and was an avid duck hunter and loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Services were held at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 12, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with the Rev. Joey Paul and Ernest Twiner officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery in the Belah-Fellowship Community under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie Barnett Twiner, and his parents.

Douglas Edward Scroggins, 48, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Thursday, March 9, 2017. He was born May 4, 1968. Services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 12, at Sandy Lake Pentecostal Church in the Sandy Lake Community of Catahoula Parish with Rev. Joel Ford officiating. Interment followed in the Huffman Cemetery of Manifest under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Wayne Scroggins; sister, Georgie Scroggins; and son, Clarence Wayne Scroggins.

Kimberly Cameron Robertson, 51, of Jena, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at her home. She was born September 28, 1965. Kimberly loved her dogs, crocheting, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was a loving mother, sister, daughter, aunt, wife and etc. She will be greatly missed by everyone. Services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 10, at Magnolia Funeral Home in Alexandria with Rev. Andy Frost officiating. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Cameron; two grandmothers and two grandfathers; one daughter, Joan Robertson; and one grandchild, William Bardwell. Survivors include her two daughters, Rosalind Ashworth and Crystal Cameron; mother, Beverly Foust and step-father W.M.

James Dosier Norris

James Dosier Norris, 82 of Jena, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 in Jena. He was born on Tuesday, September 18, 1934, in Jena, to the union of James and Clara Coleman Norris. Dosier was employed by Kendrick Grocery in Jena for many years, until it closed, and then was employed by LaSalle General Hospital as a security guard for 25 years before retiring. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 12, from the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with Rev. Gary Norris and Craig Norris officiating. Interment followed in the Woodland Cemetery, east of Jena, under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Bradford Norris and his parents. Survivors include a daughter, Jo Norris; step-children, Vickie Crooks (Frankie), Michael Amos (Wanda) and Kevin Amos (B.J.) and a sister, Doris Hallmark. Pallbearers were Mike Bradford, John Parker, Jarred Parker, Jason Parker, Eddie Speed and Ronnie Kendrick.

Viola Jones, 79, of Jena, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. She was born Saturday, January 22, 1938 to the union of her parents, Warren and Cecile Currington. Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 14, at Fellowship Baptist Church in the Belah Community with the Revs. Joel Johnson and Mike Devillier officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery in the Belah-Fellowship Community under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. She was preceded in death by her parents; six infant children; sister, Dorothy Hudnall; late husband and father of children, Burl Hailey; sons, Dannis Hailey and Gary Hailey.

Bertha Busby Howard

Bertha Busby Howard, 86, of Urania, passed from this life on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at the Hardtner Medical Center in Urania. She was born on June 16, 1930 at Cotton plant, LA to the union of her parents, William Wilburn Busby and Margaret Ann Mathew Busby, the ninth child born to this union. Mrs. Howard was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great- grandmother. She was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church. Services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 15, from the Olla chapel of Riser Funeral Home with Brothers Cory Fowler and Benjamin Howard officiating. Interment will follow in the Welcome Home Cemetery, east of Grayson, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54-years, Doc Cedric Howard; her grandson, Brent Dearmon; four sisters and four brothers, three nephews and one niece.

Tony Lee Hanson

Tony Lee Hanson, 53, of Pineville, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at his home. He was born Wednesday, July 17, 1963 in Winnfield. Tony was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Pineville, and was a logger and pipeline mechanic. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing and reminiscing about his childhood and telling wild stories of his wild ways. Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 11, in the chapel of Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield with Rev. Darryl Hoychick officiating. Interment followed in the Sardis Cemetery in Atlanta, under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee “Bob” Hanson. Survivors include his wife, Linda Smith Hanson of Pineville; children, Casey Stroud (Mitchell), T.J.

“Vince” Vinson

Cleven “Vince” Vinson, 85, of Olla, passed from this life Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Hardtner Medical Center in Urania.

He was born September 2, 1931 in Bay Minette, Alabama, to the union of his parents, Rudolph and Callie Rider Vinson.

Vince served his country in the United States Army for eight years, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was an electrician and an avid woodworker. He loved fishing with his brother Glen.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 6, at the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla with Rev. Scotty McDowell officiating.

Interment followed in the Rosefield Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla/ Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, D. J. Vinson, Glen Vinson, and Bo Vinson; sisters, Vonnie Brown and Doris Perkins; and infant sister: Thelma Vinson.

Elmo Emery Smith

Elmo Emery Smith, 90, of Olla, passed from this life on Friday, March 3, 2017, at Specialty Hospital of Winnfield.

He was born May 19, 1926 in Olla to the union of his parents, William Walter and Kitty Belle Collins Smith.

Emery was retired from the timber industry and was an avid deer and squirrel hunter, and enjoyed planting his vegetable garden.

Services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, March 10, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Olla.

Interment will follow in Tidwell Cemetery near Olla under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mavis Delores Roberts Smith; son, William Allen Smith; grandson, Christopher P. Lawless; brother, Sherman Smith; and sisters, Eloise Fox and Beatrice Smith.
