Doris C. Sanders

Doris Cockerham Sanders, 74, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and a native of LaSalle Parish, passed away on September 24, 2016, at her home. She was born on April 4, 1942, in Little Creek to Ray and Era Cockerham in Little Creek. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 26, in Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Sanders; and a son, Jim Sanders. Survivors include her children, Mike Sanders and wife Deresa and Sue Smith and husband Butch; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Nikki , Michael, Matthew, Mason, Jennifer, Keri and Peyton; two great grandchildren, Lexie and Karmyn; a brother, Ricky Cockerham and wife Cindy of Little Creek. Memorials can be made in Doris’ memory to Southern Pines Animal Shelter, 1901 N. 31st Avenue, Hattiesburg, MS 39401.

Aida Morphis

Aida Morphis, of Jena, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, in the LaSalle Nursing Home of Jena, at age of 87 years, 8 months, and 28 days. She was born December 23, 1928 in Galveston, Texas, to the family of Venancio and Mercedas Torrabla Gonzalez. Mrs. Aida was a member of the Justiss Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served as secretary-treasurer for 35 years. She was employed parttime at Justiss Oil Company in the 1950’s, and worked for 42½-years as a steno-bookkeeper for Jena Auto Company in Jena. Mrs. Aida served with the LaSalle General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary since 2001, and also sang with a group called Women of Faith in 2003. Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 23, at Justiss Memorial United Methodist Church in Trout with the Revs. Reid Terry and Amanda Carpenter officiating. Interment followed in the Hawthorne Cemetery in Little Creek under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

Rev. Ray Jones

Rev. Ray Jones, 89, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Friday, September 23, 2016. He was born January 27, 1927 to the union of his parents, Jessie L. and Florence L. Jones. Rev. Jones, a member of Sandy Lake Pentecostal Church, and World War II Navy veteran, was also an ordained minister/evangelist and preached in many churches in the area. A skilled carpenter he was owner of Jones Construction Co. and built many houses in the surrounding communities. A kind hard working, Christian man that truly loved his wife and family set an example for all to follow. Services were held at 11 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 25, at Sandy Lake Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Joel Ford and Bryan Taylor officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and two sisters, and one daughter-in-law Jean Jones.

H. M. ‘Skeeter’ Vickers

H. M. “Skeeter” Vickers, 82, of Olla, passed from this life on Monday, September 19, 2016, at the Hardtner Medical Center in Urania. He was born August 5, 1934 in Sikes to the union of his parents, Hugh C. and Blanche Taylor Vickers. Skeeter was a Deacon at Shady Grove Baptist Church. He was retired from the Louisiana Rural Water Association and he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. Skeeter also served the Ward 2 area as a member of the LaSalle Parish Police Jury from 1979 to 1987, and served as a member and chairman of Recreation District #22 for many years. Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Shady Grove Baptist Church, west of Olla, with Rev. Jesse Henderson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Carter; his parents; brother, Glenn Roy Vickers; and daughter-in-law: Peggy Vickers.

Charles R. Welch

Charles Randall “Randy” Welch, 47, passed from this life on Monday, September 12, 2016, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria. He was born June 25, 1969 in Thibodaux. Randy was employed at U.P.S-Midstream. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for six years and served two tours of combat in Iraq. His love for his children and grandchildren was his greatest joy. Services were held at 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, in the chapel of Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday with Fr. Louis Sklar officiating. He was preceded in death by parents, Robert Welch and Nora Tidwell; brothers, Lynn Welch and Joey Welch.

“Coonee” Brazell

Yvonne “Coonee” Brazell, 67, of Trout, passed from this life on Friday, September 16, 2016, at St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. She was born September 22, 1948 in Crowley. Coonee was retired after serving as a Customer Service Representative at Walmart for 18 years. Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 18, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Carl Gulde officiating. An additional service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 19, under direction of Geesey Ferguson Funeral Home in Crowley. Interment followed in the Abshire Cemetery in Crowley. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joy Suire Trahan.

Ruth Vellere Coon

Ruth Vellere Coon, 82, of Nebo, passed from this life on Thursday, September 15, 2016, at the Jena Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jena. She was born March 18, 1934 to the union of her parents, George and Melissa Ainsworth Wilson. Mrs. Coon was a homemaker. Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Gary Norris officiating. Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery in the Belah-Fellowship Community under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Charles “Shorty” C. Coon. Survivors include her son, Dempsy Coon and wife Marie of Simsboro; her daughter, Charisa C. Barrett of Ruston; her brother, W. G. Wilson of Jena; grandchildren, Heath Coon, Heather Coon, Jason Barrett, and Christy Barrett; and nine great-grandchildren.

Cynthia Broadway

Cynthia Denise Gorham Broadway, 50, of Olla, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. She was born Wednesday, September 22, 1965 in Winnfield. Mrs. Broadway was a Baptist and was employed by the Winn Parish School Board as a cafeteria manager at various schools for 13 years. Services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, at Old Union Baptist Church. Interment followed in Old Union Cemetery in Joyce under direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Daniel Gorham, Sr; and a brother, Robert Daniel Gorham, Jr. Survivors include her mother, Margaret Vines Gorham of Winnfield; friend, David Thomas Hand of Olla; son, Derek Broadway of Joyce; daughters, Lacy Paul and husband Clif of Olla; daughter, Misti Wilkerson and husband Kyle of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Kenzley Reeves, Amelia Goodeaux, Annabelle Paul, and Sophia Wilkerson; and numereous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Mickey W. Pritchard

Mickey Wayne Pritchard, 64, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at his home in the Sandy Lake Community in Catahoula Parish. He was born December 24, 1951 in Dyess, Arkansas, to the union of his parents, Robert and Willie Dee Pritchard. He was raised in West Ridge, Arkansas and later moved to Louisiana. Mr. Pritchard and his brother, Jerry, owned and operated Pritchard Brothers Farms since 1976. They were cotton and soybean farmers in Catahoula Parish. Mr. Pritchard married Janice McMillin in 1975, and they had two daughters, Angela Dee and Jamie Lynne. Services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Sandy Lake with Rev. Craig James and Father Louis Sklar officiating. Interment followed in the Heard Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena.

Alfonzy “Al” Ellis

Alfonzy “Al” Ellis, 75, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at Plantation Oaks Nursing Home in Wisner. Alfonzy was well known to sport fans throughout the area as he attended and rooted for the Block Bears and other teams. He had many friends in this area. Services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Wallace Ridge Pentecostal Church of Jonesville with the Revs. Jack Knapp, Bruce Lofton, Paul Perry and Lance Torrey officiating. Interment will follow at the Evangeline Baptist Cemetery at Wildsville under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest C. Ellis; mother, Mary “Mae” Ellis; brothers, Leon E. Ellis, Chester L. Ellis, Lendon C. Ellis, Earnest “Gene” Ellis and E.L. “Lawrence” Ellis; and sisters, Ida Lee Wiley, Helen E Fontenot and Betty Nell Champlin.
