John L. Cannon

John L. Cannon

John Lloyd Cannon, 83, of Jena, passed from this life surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 21, 2020.

He was born July 5, 1936 to the union of L.J. and Florence Cannon.

John was a native of Jena and served as a little league coach and all-star coach for many years. He served his country in the United States Navy and loved his country. He very much enjoyed his time coaching ball and being with his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was a kind spirited individual with a wit about him that never met a stranger. He will be certainly missed by all who had the chance to fellowship with him.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 25, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Mickey Hudnall and Ed Jelks officiating.

Interment followed in the Belah Cemetery of Belah under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

Estelle M. Barton

Estelle M. Barton, 94, of Stonewall and native of Catahoula Parish, passed away on May 20, 2020 in Shreveport.

She was born May 16, 1926 in Utility to Joseph and Martha McClure.

Mrs. Barton graduated from Block High School in Jonesville in 1944. She then lived many years in Marthaville, where she made lifelong friends. After retiring from the Catahoula Parish School System, she moved to Stonewall.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her.

A private graveside service was conducted at Beulah Cemetery with Jeff McClure officiating.

Interment followed under direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home Southside Chapel, Shreveport, Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Barton; parents; five brothers, Douglas McClure, Sam McClure, Juan McClure, Abner McClure and Clifford “Bud” McClure; and two sisters, Mildred Lott and Lena Mae Bell.

Phillip Ray Reeves

Phillip Ray Reeves, 74, of Jena, passed from this life on Tuesday May 12, 2020. He was called away from this world in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born April 14, 1946 in Winnsboro, to the union of Frankie L. Reeves and Sadie O. Reeves.

Phillip worked all his life in the construction industry specializing in heavy equipment operation. He enjoyed this the most. Operating heavy Equipment was a life long passion.

A private graveside service was held, under arrangments of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena

John Rodney Nugent

John Rodney Nugent

John Rodney Nugent, 80, of Georgetown, passed from this life on Thursday, May 7, 2020.

He was born February 18, 1940 in Clarks, to the union of his parents, Homer Nugent and Ethel Mae Douglas Nugent.

Private graveside services were held Monday, May 11, at Lincecum Cemetery in Georgetown with Rev. Austin Bradford officiating.

Interment followed under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nyoka Nugent; parents; brothers, Isaac Leon Nugent, Lyndell Nugent, Homer Nugent, Rubin Nugent and Aubrey Otis Nugent; and sister, Eva Olean Grice.

Those left to cherish in his memory include his sons, John Matthew Nugent (Nancy), Carlos Gregory Nugent (Sherri), and Joseph Jason Nugent, all of Georgetown, and Rodney Heath Nugent (Susan) of Pollock; daughters, Nyoka Malette Kendrick (Jeff), Cassie Smith (Tom), and Julie LaJurn Wade (Jeff), all of Georgetown; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

John Raymond Larison, 87, of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, May 14, 2020.

He was born September 21, 1932.

Donald “Duck” Dean

Donald “Duck” Dean, 66, of Missouri City, Texas, and a native of Jena, transitioned from this life on Thursday, April 10, 2020, at Houston Methodist Hospital Medical Center. He had been on dialysis for a number of years.

Born October 8, 1953, Donald was the sixth child born to Wiley and Ruthie Johnson Dean. He accepted Christ at an early age, was baptized by the late Rev. Dave Woods, and was a member of New Evergreen Baptist Church of Jena.

Donald began his education at Good Pine High School and graduated from Jena High School in 1971, and furthered his education by attending and graduating from Grambling College in 1976. On his high school basketball team, Donald was named “Most Dependable”. He was that throughout his earthly journey. He was a flag carrier in Grambling’s marching band which performed at Super Bowl IX in New Orleans in 1975.

John Rodney Nugent, 80, of Georgetown, passed from this life on Thursday, May 7, 2020.

Gary Wayne Michou

Gary Wayne Michou

Gary Wayne Michou, 67, of Jena, and formerly of Eagle River, Alaska, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.

He was born on September 24, 1952 in Anchorage, Territorial Alaska to Lawrence “Tex” and Evelyn Michou. He married Cindy Erkel on June 26, 1976 in Anchorage.

Gary graduated from Anchorage West High School in 1970. He attended Denver Diesel and Automotive School. After graduating, he followed his father by joining the International Operating Engineers, Local 302 in 1974. He began his career working on equipment used to construct the Trans Alaska Pipeline rapidly completing his apprenticeship.

He returned to Anchorage and worked for Sea Land and then Anchorage Sand and Gravel. He retired from AS&G after 27 years as Shop Superintendent. Gary took great pride of achieving the rank of Master Mechanic and teaching young mechanics the complexities of heavy construction equipment.

Bonnye Sue McKinney

Bonnye Sue McKinney

Bonnye Sue Wisham McKinney, 82, of Jena, passed from this life at her residence on Friday, May 8, 2020.

She was born February 16, 1938 in Jena.

Bonnye Sue and her late husband, Bill, operated Bill’s Café in the Wright Building in downtown Jena for many years.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Parkview Baptist Church in Monroe.

Private graveside services were held Sunday, May 10, at Pine Hill Cemetery near Urania with the Revs. Steve Jones and Mike Russell officiating.

Interment followed under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Bill R. McKinney; one son, Ray McKinney; and a sister, Sonja Wray.

Those left to cherish in her memory include her daughter, Darla Sue McGuffee, and husband Brad; and one grandson Cody Ray McGuffee, all of Jena; and her companion and lifelong friend, Jerry Mott of Monroe.
