Gwendolyn Dozier

Gwendolyn Evonne Dozier, 72, of Jena, passed from this life on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Christus St. Frances Hospital in Alexandria.

She was born October 26, 1946 in Clarks to the union of her parents, Johnny Stevenson and Idell Donald.

As a young child, she was raised in Clarks by her great grandmother, Saline Davis, until they re-located to Jena, where Gwendolyn attended Good Pine High School.

She accepted Christ at an early age, and united with the L&A Missionary Baptist Church in Good Pine, and served as a faithful member, including service on the Usher Board.

Gwendolyn was employed by Belden Wire and Cable Company in Jena for 20 years. After her retirement, she volunteered at the LaSalle Mission House for more than 20 years.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 30, at L&A Baptist Church in Good Pine with Rev. Jimmy Young officiating.

Ellis ‘Choate’ Evans

Ellis “Choate” Evans, 74, of Pollock, passed from this life on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.

He was born August 26, 1944 to the union of his parents, J. P. and Edna Beavers Evans.

Choate served our country in the Louisiana Army National Guard and also worked in the timber industry as a logger. He was a member of Lincecum Baptist church and was a kind soul, holding no hate for anyone.

Choate was an avid sportsman who loved the outdoors and caring for horses. A special husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, he loved his grandkids and great grandson tremendously and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them. He was deeply loved and will be fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Services celebrating his life were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 6, at Lincecum Baptist Church of Georgetown with the Revs. Jim Winegeart and Courtney Dunn officiating.

Mildred L. Lansdale

Mildred LaVonne Lansdale, 83, of Jonesville and formerly of Olla, passed from this life on Sunday, March 31, 2019, in Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born November 17, 1935 to the union of her parents, Cy and Laura Wainwright. She was a sweet spirited soul, and loved by all who knew her.

Ms. Lansdale was a member of the First Baptist Church of Olla. She enjoyed hunting and fishing in her pastime, and was a devoted homemaker for her family.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, in the Olla Cemetery with Rev. Bryan Rankin officiating.

Interment followed under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lansdale; parents; two brothers, Tommy Wainwright, and J.T. Wainwright; and three sisters, Modelle Vanantwerpen, Doris Babcock, and Kathrine Dana.

Burl Lively

Burl Lively, 85, of Jena, passed from this life on Sunday, March 31, 2019, in Jena following a lengthy illness.

He was born December 3, 1933 in Columbia to the union of his parents, Claudius Davenport Lively and Katie Mae Harveston Lively.

Mr. Lively retired from the Louisiana Department of Transportation. He loved riding horses and working cows. He also enjoyed farming and was happiest when driving a tractor or combine. He had a big heart and was loved by all who knew him.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 2, from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Denver McBroom officiating.

Interment followed in the Welcome Home Cemetery, east of Grayson, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Burl “Poncho” Lively; sister, Mary Lynde; and brother, Claude Lively.

Cleo Nichols

Cleo Nichols, 90, of Jena, passed from this life on Thursday, April 4, 2019.

He was born January 18, 1929 in Boyce to the union of his parents, William Daniel Nichols and Lillie Coutee Nichols.

Cleo was a member of Jena First Baptist Church, Boyce and Michael Dempsey Masonic Lodges for over 50 years (Past Master); Eastern Star (Past Worthy Patron); Blue Lodge; Scottish Rite; and El Karubah Shrine.

Mr. Nichols worked in the oil field most all his life and retired as Drilling Superintendent from Justiss Oil Company in 1982. He was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the 224th Infantry from 1951 to 1952.

He loved his family, loved to hunt and fish, had an incredible sense of humor and was very loved by anyone who knew him.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 6, at First Baptist Church of Jena with the Revs. Craig James and Dominick DiCarlo officiating.

John Eddie Cotten

John Eddie Cotten, 73, of Trout, passed from this life on Saturday, March 23, 2019.

He was born November 7, 1945 in Urania to the union of his parents, John Wesley Cotten and Josie LaVurle Gough Cotten.

John was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather with a warm spirit and big heart. He loved nature and animals.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 26, in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena with Brother Chance Steen officiating.

Interment followed in the Taylor Chapel Cemetery near Summerville under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. of Jena.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Marry Nell Cotten, and Sissy Jones. Those left to cherish in his memory include his wife of 37 years, Pam Boyett Cotten of Trout; daughter, Samantha Cotten Manning and husband Jeffrey of Jena; and two grandchildren, Levon and Josie Manning.

Jackie R. Reeves

Jackie R. Reeves, 70, of the Sandy Lake Community of Catahoula Parish, passed from this life on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the LaSalle General Hospital of Jena.

He was born Thursday, June 17, 1948 at Jonesville to the union of Jephta Reeves and Dorothy Reeves.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 28, at First Pentecostal Church of Jonesville with Rev. Bruce Lofton officiating.

Interment followed in the Heard Cemetery near Manifest under direction of Magnolia Funeral Home of Alexandria.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Shirley Reeves.

Ashton Lane Harris

Ashton Lane Harris became an angel in Heaven on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at his residence in Latrell, Louisiana.

During his three short months here on Earth (born December 22, 2018), he touched many lives. He was deeply loved by his family and friends.

Doris R. Alexander

Doris Richardson Alexander, 99, of Jena, passed from this life surrounded by her loving family in the La-Salle Nursing Home of Jena on Saturday, March 30, 2019.

She was born February 11, 1920 to the union of Roy and Lula Richardson.

Ms. Alexander was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Jena, and a former member of Oak Grove Baptist Church of Rhinehart.

She was a sweet spirited soul, and was loved by all who knew her. She was a devoted church worker and especially loved the Lord. Ms. Alexander was retired from the education system and was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She will certainly be missed by all who knew her.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, April 1, at First Baptist Church in Jena with the Revs. Dominick DiCarlo and Terry Townsend officiating.

Interment followed in the Alexander Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

Sandra Ferguson

Sandra Ferguson, 70, passed from this life on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.

She was born February 8, 1949 in Orlando, Florida to the union of her parents, Edwin Herndon and Louise Grant Herndon.

Sandra loved her family and she enjoyed fishing.

Memorial services will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 28, at the First Baptist Church in Tullos.

Her ashes will be spread in Florida where she grew up.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Dewana Black and husband Glynn, Tonya Wofford, and son, Ronnie Ferguson; grandchildren, Jason Black and wife Hannah, James Black and wife Madison, Brandon Morrison, Josh Faircloth and wife Jamie, Addison Williams, Noah Ferguson, and Jasper Ferguson; and great grandchildren, Logan Morrison, Annistyn Black, Madison Faircloth, and Allison Faircloth.
