Sherman Floyd Brooks

Sherman Floyd Brooks, 69, of Lake Charles, and native of Jena, died at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2016, at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Lake Charles.

He was born September 7, 1947 in Jena to his parents, Beulah and Floyd Brooks.

Sherman was a graduate of Jena High School. He worked in the Petrochemical Industry for many years as a Drilling Consultant. He loved the outdoors and had many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia Volentine Brooks of Lake Charles; one son, David Brooks of DeQuincy; his mother, Beulah Brooks of Jena; one sister, Sharon Brooks of Jena; two grandchildren, Tyler and Alex Brooks of DeQuincy.

He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd Eddie Brooks.

Cremation was entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.


J. R. “Pete” Smith

Jesse R. “Pete” Smith, 81, of Ball entered eternal rest on Friday, January 27, 2017, at Rapides Regional Hospital in Alexandria. Pete and his wife, Kathy, owned and operated Piggly Wiggly Grocery in Jena for many years.

Pete was a native of Pineville, born August 4, 1935, and a member of Hosanna Baptist Church, Ball.

During his working years, he was a grocery store owner; then, after many years, he worked as a Sales Rep. for Specialty Foods. Upon retirement he started part time work at Harvest Foods in Marksville, where he so much felt at home and loved his workers as his second family.

After graduating in the first graduating class at Pineville High School, of which he was proud to be a part, he moved to Muskegon, Michigan; while on vacation back in Pineville, he met his forever wife, Kathryn; they fell in love and married on July 30, 1955. God blessed this union with two sons, Randy and David.


Sherry G. Roberts

Sherry Dean Graham Roberts, 61, of Columbia, passed from this life on Friday, January 27, 2017, at the main campus of Oschner Medical Center in New Orleans.

She was born March 9, 1955 in Jena to the union of her loving parents, Clyde Russell Graham and Juanita Price Graham.

Sherry was a member of the Outreach Baptist Church and was Assistant Warden at the Caldwell Correctional Center. Sherry was a wonderful cook and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Sherry was the kind of person where you knew where you stood with her.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31, from the sanctuary of Outreach Baptist Church with Rev. C. R. Martin officiating.

Interment followed in the Welcome Home Cemetery, east of Grayson, under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Warner and Betty Dannehl; and two nephews, Russell and Keith Warner.


Bessie C. Jernigan

Bessie Grace Crooks Jernigan, 93, of Wildsville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at her home in Wildsville.

She was born on January 19, 1924 in Walters, to the union of her parents, Frank and Martha Stevenson Crooks.

Bessie was a devoted wife and mother whose life exemplified her faith and virtue. She was a member of Evangeline Baptist Church, where she fatihfully served the Lord for many years.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Evangeline Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph Webber, Brad Crooks and Curtis Smith officiating.

Interment followed at Evangeline Baptist Church Cemetery of Wildsville under direction of Young’s Funeral Home of Jonesville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 60-plus years, Calvin Jernigan; brother. N. D. Crooks; and four sisters, Hilda Watson, Allie Ware, Elsie Clark, and Ora Brown.


Wanda Walters Greba

Wanda Walters Greba, passed from this life on Monday, January 23, 2017, at her residence in Bossier City, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 25 days.

She was born February 29, 1928 in Homer to the family of John Flynt and Jimmie Lee Adams Walters.

Wanda married Raymond Greba in the 1960’s in Bossier City, where they made their home.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 27, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with Rev. Gary Norris officiating.

Her husband, parents and brothers, John Lee Walters, Jimmy Ezell and Buddy Ezell, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a brother, A. J. Walters and wife Evelyn of Tuscurora, MD; a nephew, Norman Walters of Gaitherburg, MD; four nieces, Stephanie Walters Eberhart of San Diego, CA., Pamela Walters Pipta and husband Mark of Derwood, MD., Shawn Walters Tarver of Jena and Lee Walters Trechel of West Monroe; three great nephews, five great nieces and four great great nieces.


Patsy E. DeSoto

Patsy Edwards DeSoto, 69, of Deville, and a native of Jena, passed from this life to her Heavenly home on Thursday, January 19, 2017.

She was born September 15, 1947 in Jena to the union of her parents, Albert and Catherine Edwards.

A graduate of Jena High School, Patsy was headstrong and determined and lived life her way. She loved to fish, dance and work in her flower beds. She loved her little fur babies and camp life with her husband and best friend, who will miss her presence the most.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 22 at Pine Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Ronnie Nation and Joe Peppers officiating.

Interment followed at Unity Baptist Church Cemetery in Deville under direction of Gallagher Funeral Home of Pineville.

She was preceded in death by her son, David S. Tillar; and her parents.


Hank Brown

Hank Brown, 73, of Nebo, passed from this life on January 24, 2017, to his eternal home in heaven.

He was born on August 8, 1943 to the union of Ernest LeRoy and Frankie Shelton Brown. He was born into the family of God in September 2001.

Hank was a welder and also worked in the Maintenance Department of LaSalle General from May 2002 until he retired in 2014. He was the LaSalle General Hospital Employee of the Year in 2005. He was a member of First Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Hank Brown, Jr.; two sisters, Eva Shugrue and Tina Hall; and first wife, Gayle Brown.


Charles Thacker

Charles Wayne Thacker, 62, of Victoria, Texas, passed from this life on Sunday, January 22, 2017.

He was born on November 8, 1954 to Lee and Annie DeVille Thacker.

Charles was employed with Formosa as an operator and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Grace Funeral Home in Victoria, Texas, with Pastor Larry Green officiating.

Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria County Veterans Council, AL, CWV, VFW, DAV, MCL, MOWW, EX-POW, MOPH, VVA, and KWV.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Thacker; father, Lee Thacker; and brother, Arnold Thacker.


Jeffrey Alan Ratcliff

Jeffrey Alan Ratcliff, 51, of Kiln, Mississippi, passed from this life on Sunday, January 15, 2017, surrounded by his wife, Tina, and close family friend, Linda Ellis Burton.

He was born October 27, 1965 in New Orleans.

Jeffrey worked the Mississippi River as a Tow Boat Captain for 27 years.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Pinehill Baptist Church near Olla.

Services were also held at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, at Shiloh Baptist Church at Kiln, MS

Survivors include his wife Tina Adams Ratcliff of Kiln, MS; daughter, Jessica Eubanks Page and husband Johnnie of Fort Gibson, OK and their five children Bailee, Karley, Katie, Chloe, and Blaze; daughter, Terri Bryant and husband Fred of Perkinston, MS and their three children, Aaron, Autumn, and Marcus; Aunt and Uncle Elaine and Wayne Hosner of Lumberton MS; and countless brother and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.


Peggy Sue Peyton

Peggy Sue Peyton, 58, of Jonesville, passed from this life on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, in the Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria.

She was born December 8, 1958 in Jena to the union of her parents, Robert Dale “Rip” and Bobbie Ruth Gunn Ray.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 20, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with Rev. Joey Paul and Bro. Beau Manasco officiating.

Interment followed in the Nebo Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena.

She was preceded in death by her father, and Maw Maw Nancy Ray.
