Annual Catahoula-LaSalle Bank Holiday Basketball tournament

The annual Catahoula- LaSalle Bank Holiday Classic basketball tournament was held this past weekend on the campus of Jena High school. There were a number of schools from around the area at the tournament, which was played in both gyms at Jena High School.

The host Jena Lady Giants come into this season looking to make another playoff berth after making the 2nd round of the playoffs last season.

Ten Tigers named to All-District teams

Ten LaSalle High School Tigers were recently named to the District 4-1A All-District Team.

LaSalle finished the 2016 football season with a district record of 2-3, in a very strong district that included an always-tough St. Mary’s squad and the LHSAA Class 1A State Champions, Logansport.

Sixteen Giants named to All-District teams

Sixteen Jena High School Giants were recently named to the 2016 Class 3-3A All-District Football Team.

The Giants finished 6-1 in District 3-3A play, losing only to Marksville - the district champions, and advanced to the second round of the LHSAA Class 3A playoffs where they lost to Northwest of Opelousas.

Outdoors books make great Christmas gifts

As I sit at my computer writing this week’s column, it’s chilly; it’s nasty; it’s raining outside. Once I get my column done, I’ll likely kick back in my recliner, pour a cup of coffee and chill out with a good book, preferably outdoors themed.

With Christmas approaching, I’m pleased to share a few books that your hunter-angler spouse or brother or friend would love to find under the Christmas tree this year.

LDWF urge boat safety by hunters

With the fall and winter outdoor season underway in Louisiana, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division is reminding hunters about boating safety during the colder months of the year.

Hunting season for many people in Louisiana means utilizing boats to get to remote hunting areas often times during low visibility and in cold weather.

Jena Giants great season comes to an end at Northwest with loss 43-7

The Giants traveled to Opelousas this past Friday to take on the Northwest Raiders in the 2nd round of the Class 3A state playoffs. There were a lot of similarities between the two programs as both programs were in the playoffs for the 4th straight season. Also, both teams were looking to make the quarterfinal round of the playoffs for the second time in school history. The Giants were looking to pick up their second road playoff win in school history after they blew out Booker T. Washington 56-14 at home in round 1 of the playoffs. The captains for the Giants were Parker Fink, Craig Walker, David Wilson, and Jaray Jenkins.

LaSalle Tiger Quarterback Senior Waddie Skinner (2) throws a pass while blocked by several fellow Tigers including Seniors J.G. Giants blowout Booker T. 56-14 to advance; take on Northwest this Friday in 2nd round

The Jena Giants played their first round playoff game this past Friday as the Booker T. Washington Lions came to town. The Giants were looking to pick up their 4th playoff win in school history. The Giants came into the playoffs as the #9 seed and district 3-3A runner-up. The Lions came in as the #24 seed with a 4-6 record out of district 1-3A in Shreveport. The captains for the Giants were Parker Fink, Craig Walker, David Wilson, and Jaray Jenkins. Booker T. won the toss and elected to defer to the second half.
