Jena Lady Giants blow out Marksville; Giants pick up two big district victories

Article Image Alt Text
By Austin Whatley

The Jena Lady Giants traveled to Avoyelles to take on the Lady Mustangs this past Tuesday. The Lady Giants came into the game with a 9-10 overall and 3-1 district record while the Lady Mustangs came in with a 9-8 overall and 3-1 district record. This would be an important district 3-3A contest as both teams had the same district record and a win would put that team on top of the other in the district standings.

Jena Lady Giants pick up another district win; Giants to start district

By Austin Whatley

The Jena Lady Giants continued district play this past week as they traveled to Winnfield to take on the Winnfield Lady Tigers. Both teams are expected to compete for a district championship so this was a big game for both teams. Winnfield started the game with some good defense in a full court press defense. The Lady Giants struggled with this as they trailed 10-1 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Lady Giants were able to figure out the press in the 2nd quarter as they outscored Winnfield 20-14 in the quarter.

Coach Todd Long is entering his 17th year as the head coach of the LaSalle Tiger Basketball team and things couldn’t be coming together better. The Tigers are off to a 8-3 start and of the 3 losses, 2 were at the buzzer and the other we were just outplayed. So, with that being said the Tigers are roaring out of the gate and coming together at the right time.

LaSalle Lady Tigers basketball team has compiled 7-7 record

Article Image Alt Text
By Greg Jones

The Lady Tigers this year have compiled a 7-7 record thus far. A year ago this team was decimated with injuries and only 6 players could take the floor on any given night. Those six players fought in every contest until the final buzzer. The team consisted of one senior and five underclassmen. Those underclassmen were able to get some valuable varsity experience last year and brought it to the gym this season.

Jena Giant football stories

By Billy Fowler

Some interesting Jena High School football events have happened through the years. I thought you might like to know some of them. Back in 1935, JHS dropped football and did not pick it up again until 1948. There are a couple of stories back in 1936 you might find amusing, especially since it is duck hunting season.

by By Billy Fowler

As I stated in one of my articles, there was room for errors and if anyone caught one, to please let me know. Someone placed a message in my mailbox with a possible error and after double checking, I found the messager’s information to be true.

Principals of Jena High since 1869

by By Billy Fowler

It disturbs me that our Jena High School students graduate and do not know the history of our old beloved school. Little do they know the history of our old school goes back to 1843 and many of the things we grew up believing to be true is not true. It is a long story. However, all JHS grads needs to know that the Rev. Talbert A. Routon is the one person who got our school started back in 1869. Rev. Routon came to the Hemps Creek area in 1839 from Georgia and quickly became the leading citizen. It was the Rev. Routon who started the Old Salem Church in 1843 and later in 1869, a school.
