First newspaper in Catahoula in 1854

The other day I was reading “Caldwell Parish in Slices”, written by H. Ted Woods, the late editor of The Caldwell-Watchman Progress in Columbia.

I cut my teeth in the newspaper business under the leadership of Woods, starting to work at the Watchman when I started my freshman year at Columbia High School in 1955. Years later, Woods wrote two editions of “Caldwell Parish in Slices”, of which I have both copies.

I had never noticed the article about the first newspaper in Catahoula, which reportedly was started in 1854. It was The Harrisonburg Independent published by J.Q.A. Taliaferro, who was also president of the Catahoula Parish Police Jury.
