Four JAG students from Jena High School – Brock Shively, Serenity McCoy, Karrizzma Kittlin, and Paris Simmons - presented a brief program on dangers of smoking to members of the LaSalle Parish School Board during its regular meeting for May. The program, “Next Era”, is a statewide youth movement for high school students in Louisiana. It is a program of the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living and the mission is to promote a healthy, tobacco-free Louisiana. The students have completed training on health issues caused by tobacco and are asking for stronger vaping restrictions and help in educating today’s teens on the dangers of tobacco. They feel that someone should not have to choose between his or her paycheck and being healthy and are working with this campaign to help change the laws for all people to work and visit in any public establishment without having to make a choice of whether or not to have healthy air.
