Six-year-old JT Mason plays a tie-shaped rubboard with thimbles alongside performer Elizabeth “Lady Chops” Vidos last week as part of the LaSalle Parish Library’s Summer Reading Program in Jena. Vidos also performed that afternoon in Olla. She is a former rhythm performer with the international and American performance group STOMP out of New York City. Vidos, a south Louisiana native, demonstrated a variety of skills with traditional and non-traditional percussion instruments from drums and boxes to rain sticks and buckets. The Friday program was provided in collaboration with McKinney Vento’s Federal Grant. This Friday (June 25), the library will host award-winning children’s author and musician Johnette Downing from New Orleans. She will perform at 10 a.m. in Jena and at 2 p.m. in Olla. Dubbed the “Musical Ambassador to Children,” Johnette is an engaging musician and storyteller, who has performed across the world.
