The Jena Giants traveled to Alexandria this past Friday to take on the Menard Eagles in a scrimmage.
The Giants were coming off a historic season that saw them make it to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs and almost pull off a huge upset in overtime against Lake Charles College Prep.
The Giants lost a great senior class from last season so the scrimmage would be a great opportunity to see what some new starters will look like going into the season. Both teams would alternate series of plays on offense and defense before playing two 15 minute quarters.
On defense the Giants would put some pressure on the Menard offense as senior linebacker Adam Stevens would pick up a tackle for loss and a sack. Jamey Sanders and Jakobe Washington would also pick up some tackles in the backfield from the defensive line.
Junior running back Brandon Williams had a couple of long runs and some long catch runs out of the backfield.
In the official two quarters period of the scrimmage Menard would outscore the Giants 14-8. The Giants scoring drive would go 70 yards in 6 plays ending with a Josh Washington 7 yard touchdown run. Tate Turnage would complete a pass to Brandon Williams for the 2-point conversion.
The Giants would finish with 132 total yards with 71 on the ground and 61 in the air. Senior quarterback Tate Turnage finished the game with 6 completions on 9 attempts for 61 yards and 1 carry for 12 rushing yards.
Sophomore running back Josh Washington finished with 6 carries for 31 yards and 1 touchdown. Brandon Williams had 4 carries for 28 rushing yards.
The Giants did suffer an injury in the scrimmage as sophomore running back/linebacker Dylon Davis suffered a broken arm after being brought down as he was carrying the ball.
This Friday the Giants will compete in the Bayou Jamb on the campus of ULM. The Giants will compete against the Oak Grove Tigers. The Tigers come into the season after winning back to back class 1A State Championships.
