70 Years Ago September 20, 1951 Books Would Roll Right To Your Area…A Library-On-Wheels is part of a parish-wide demonstration library, carrying library services to all sections of the parish. A LaSalle Parish Demonstration Library would include bookmobile service to rural communities.

Books Would Roll Right To Your Area…A Library-On-Wheels is part of a parish-wide demonstration library, carrying library services to all sections of the parish. A LaSalle Parish Demonstration Library would include bookmobile service to rural communities. LaSalle’s Police Jury is currently considering an appropriation for the parish share of expenses for a year’s demonstration and will decide the matter this fall.

A birthday party was given for Nelda and Melba Ireland on Saturday, September 15th on their 12th birthday. Some of those enjoying the party were Gloria Jean Ainsworth, Linda Carroll Allbritton, Joy Lee, Willie Jean Edwards, Lucy Fern, Elaine Tony, Lee Ann and Paulina Pearson, Dicky and Dian Carpenter, Mrs. Sim A. Thomas, Mrs. Luther Pearson, Mrs. A. G. Edwards, Mrs. J. C. Carpenter, and Mrs. R. E. Pearson.

William H. Smith, Seaman Apprentice, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Smith, of Jena, recently visited screen star Paul Douglas during the rehearsal of “Petrified Forest,” starring Jan Sterling, Douglas’ wife. The play was staged at the LaJolla Playhouse in San Diego. Smith is assigned to the Legal Office at the U.S. Naval Air Station, San Diego.

Notes from JHS… Class officers were elected last week by the four classes at Jena High School for the 1961-62 session. Those elected include: Freshmen – Carl Gulde, President; Billie Wallace, Vice-President; Sandra Thompson, Secretary-Treasurer; Susan Stevens, Reporter; and Nedra Hopkins, and Melvin Miles, Student Council Representatives. Sophomores – Cindy Smith, President; David Taylor, Vice-President; Sara Nan Owens, Secretary-Treasurer; Sue Davis, Reporter; Kenneth Cockerham and Raymond Clary, Student Council Representatives. Juniors – Jerrol Calk, President; Pam Dobbs, Vice-President; Dianne Trussell, Secretary-Treasurer; Mary Corley, Reporter; Jan Wright and Jerry Peavy, Student Council Representatives. Seniors – Larry Buckelew, President; Darryl Valentine, Vice-President; Neva Sharbono, Secretary-Treasurer; Iva Windham, Reporter; Frances Doughty and Janice Morgan, Student Council Representative.

Jena High School Cheerleaders for the 1961-62 sessions are Nancy Floyd, Jean Crooks, Cindy Smith, Anita Bradford, Nona Farley, and Debra Crooks.

State Jaycee President Don Courts visited with members of the Jena Jaycees last Tuesday on a bus stop in Jena. Those attending were Aaron Joubert, President; Jerry Hawsey, Mike Wego, Regional Jaycee Vice President; Jim Barnes, local director; and State Jaycee Editor and member of the Jena Jaycees Sammy Franklin.

1971 LaSalle Parish Fair Winners…Miss LaSalle Parish Queen, Kathy Hulsey; 1st runner-up, Cheryl Windham; 2nd runner-up, Iris Sturdivant. Miss Petite Queen, Connie Hailey; 1st runner-up, Darlea Johnson; 2nd runner-up, Sharon Kay Andrews. Miss Pre-Teen Queen, Dena Lynn King; 1st runner-up, Deedra Bignar; 2nd runner-up, Ann Lindsey. Little Miss Fair Queen, Colinda Springer; 1st runner-up, Angelia Joubert; 2nd runner-up, Anita Head.

Miss Tam Cook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Cook of Urania, won two first place ribbons at the 4th annual Central La. Ceramic Show held this last week.

Miss Pre-Teen Fair Queen, Tammy Jordan; 1st runner-up, Misty Brooks; 2nd runner-up, Valissa Renee Hall. Little Miss LaSalle Fair Queen, Jeanie Long; 1st runner-up, Tiffany Wilson; 2nd runner-up, Natasha Ratcliff. LaSalle Fair Itsy Bitsy Queen Kelly Hudspeth; 1st runner-up, Kylie Farmer; 2nd runner-up, Stephanie Jordan.

Fellowship 4-H Club met Monday, September 14, 1981. The meeting was called to order by President Steven Windham. The new 4-H officers were introduced. They are President, Steven Windham; Vice-President, Darrell Pritchard; Secretary, Stacey LaCroix; Reporter, Lanette Neal; Treasurer, Linda Prince; Council Members, Joey Smith and Tony Knapp; Cheerleaders, Kelli Fitzgerald, Rhonda Esters, and Nancy Minchew; Song Leaders, Yolanda Chapman and Gina McDaniel.

The 1996 LaSalle High School Homecoming Queen is Dani Lindsey; Princess is Brooke Elliott; Maids are Amanda Mann, Melinda Maxwell, Kristal Powers, and Nikki Thompson. In conjunction with Homecoming, downtown Olla will be the site for the fourth annual Downtown Homecoming on September 28th from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Gordon Gene Jones, a native of Olla, now residing in New York, will be one of the entertainers. He has appeared in numerous Broadway musicals.

Kindergarten students at Nebo Elementary School recently learned School Bus Safety. Students in Ms. Deason’s class participating were Trully Butler, Laken Strebeck, Michaela Richard, Stephanie Carlton, Logan Stringer, Ethan Whatley, Jamie McCartney, Austin Allen, Brandon Norris, Mackenzie Nolker, Haley Lincecum, David Lincecum, Cade Pritchard, Jacob Crawford, Amy Breland, and Ryan Nix.

Henry E. Ates of Urania celebrated his 93rd birthday on September 1st with a fish fry, desserts and birthday cake. Approximately 48 people attended the celebration.

This past week, Rainer and Cornelia Jahrmarkt, and their entire family from Jena, Germany, arrived in our community as guests of Judge and Mrs. Jim Peters and Judge and Mrs. Chris Peters. Other guests included the Jahrmarkts’ daughter, Christin and her four-year-old daughter, Lua, as well as their son, Tobias, his wife Elisa and their seven-month-old daughter, Ruby. In 1999, Christin resided in Judge and Mrs. Jim Peters’ home for a time during her foreign exchange academic year in the United States. Among points of interest the group toured was the Jena Town Hall, The Jena Times office, LaSalle Parish Courtroom, LaSalle General Physical Therapy facility, and Jena First Baptist Church.

Tyler Paul caught this large White Perch on September 11th in Old River while fishing with his grandparents, Charley and Kathy Chapman.

There will be a Fourth Year Appreciation Service on Sunday, September 25th honoring Rev. and Mrs. Jimmy Young at L&A Baptist Church in Good Pine.
