Robert Truett Doughty, 75, of Brownsville, Texas, and a native of Jena, died Friday, January 21, 2022, following a long illness of 50 years.
He was born on April 1, 1946 in Pineville to the union of Millard Truett and Alice Christine Doughty.
He enjoyed his early years living next door to his paternal grandparents in Manifest. At the age of 6, the family moved to Jena, where his dad owned and operated Doughty’s Service Station. It was there working as a crew hand at the age of 11 that Bob would develop his passion for anything on wheels. He overhauled an engine at the age of 13 and automobiles and airplanes would be his life-long hobby.
He graduated from Jena High School in 1964 and joined the United States Air Force in 1965. He was in the communications field of service and was stationed outside Madrid, Spain for three years. While there, he continued his passion for cars and enjoyed many “car club” events. He returned home in October 1967 to make Linda Book his bride. She joined him in Spain where they had a two-year honeymoon. Sadly, his departure physical would reveal that he had acquired Histoplasmosis, a fungus disease assaulting his right lung.
Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1969, Bob attended Louisiana Tech University for two years and then transferred to the University of Houston, graduating in 1976 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree, focused on Heat and Power.
He worked for General Electric for seven years and then moved on to other power industry facilities. He was the owner and president of Turbine Services, Inc, for 25 years, retiring two years ago.
While not working, Bob and Linda were enjoying their many traveling adventures in their sports cars or RV’s, or flying to Cancun or Spain. Bob loved his many years of working on cars in his fabulous garage. There are an untold number of car show events he attended in his lifetime. He has been a member of the National Austin Healey Club for over 40 years and Corvettes of PA for nearly 15 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant great-granddaughter Addison Doughty; father-in-law W.A. Book; brother-in-law W.J. Book; sister-in-law Deborah Book; and best friends, Ron Vallecorsa and Lee Zieger.
Services will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Kinner & Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with his cousin, Rev. Gerald Richardson officiating.
A full Military Honor Guard interment will follow in the Richardson Family Cemetery in Jena under the direction of Kinner & Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.
