The Town of Urania’s Acting Mayor Pat McDougald discussed the town’s upcoming Christmas events with the Council during their regular monthly meeting last week. McDougald said the Senior Citizens Christmas Supper is set for Thursday, December 1 at 5 p.m. at the Urania Recreational Hall and Santa in the Square is set for Thursday, December 8 at 5 p.m. He thanked the Urania Pentecostal Church for agreeing to host the event at the square this year.

Council member Tom Douglas brought up the annual Urania House Decorating Contest that is currently underway. He said judging will be Friday, December 17.

He said the categories for the contest include Brightest Display, Best Theme, Most Creative and Grand Prize for Most Beautiful. The grand prize will be $200 and runner-up will be $50. For each category, the winner’s award is $125 and runner-up award is $50. To enter the contest, sign up at town hall by stopping by or calling 318-495-3452.

Cynthia Cockerham and Laurel Comeaux with LEDD (LaSalle Economic Development District) were on hand at the meeting to discuss an upcoming meeting and a grant opportunity. Comeaux invited the mayor and Council members to the monthly LEDD meeting set for Thursday, November 17 at 6 p.m. at Olla First Baptist Church. She said a Thanksgiving meal will be served that evening and that all are invited to share what is going on in their town.

Cockerham then spoke about a new Healthy Behaviors Program Grant opportunity through The Rapides Foundation. She said LEDD will apply for the grant parish wide so to please let her know what the town is in need of that falls within the categories of healthy eating, active living and the prevention of substance and alcohol abuse and tobacco use. She said this grant was responsible for the town’s basketball court.

Council member Bill Brown brought up that maybe purchasing safety rubber matting to put on the playground would be good to ask for. Cockerham agreed and asked if he would gather a quote for her of what it might cost and he said he would look into it.

She then brought up the Thrive Arts Program that was held from August to September at the rec hall. A collaborative piece of art from the program was on display at the meeting and Cockerham said all the students seemed to not only enjoy the class but also using the rec hall. Council member Mike Russell said his granddaughter attended the class and said she really enjoyed it.

She thanked the mayor and Council for the use of the rec hall and said they would like to hold another class there from January to February. She also suggested that they consider having a building use fee as well as looking into grants for new lighting, etc. for the building.

McDougald then reported regarding water that all is going well and regarding sewer that they are still doing the best they can with what they have.

In the police department report, there were 60 citations and $7,692.10 collected in fines and fees for October.

Police Juror Tim Lasiter updated the mayor and Council that since summer they worked on drainage in the town and replaced several culverts as well as graded a few roads, installed several wheelchair ramps and cleaned up the bridge. He also said the crew is starting now at West Hardtner to clear ditches and install culverts. He added that the police jury is trying to get away from cold mix patching.

He said one of the biggest upcoming projects will be overlaying the whole section of road at Hardtner Medical Center from Highway 165 to where the new medical offices are being built. He said there are three bids for the work.

Council member Brown commented on the danger of a large hole on that road that people dart around in their vehicles and many accidents have nearly been caused because of it.

Lasiter said the work will address that and the reason they have not addressed it yet is because he did not want to fill the hole in with tar because people do not want to get tar on their vehicles. He said there are three places on that road that are sunken in and they will be dug out and repaired using a layout machine. Brown said the plan sounded good and he thanked Lasiter.
