The Dixie Girls Softball League kicked off on Saturday with the first pitch thrown by long-time league umpire Jimmy Greer. He threw it to six-yearold Julianne Smith, the catcher for the Brisket House Sweetees t-ball team. This year, Greer has served as an umpire in the league for 23 years and was asked to throw the first pitch in appreciation for his many years of dedication.

When dogwoods bloom
The woods and trees of our local communities have slowly begun awakening to a palette of new greens and gentle beginnings of spring flowers. One of the most beautiful expressions, in this writer’s opinion, are the graceful blooms of the dogwood trees.
