Man Attacked at Jena Bank

A 71-year-old Nebo resident was allegedly attacked at a local Jena bank last Thursday by a 55-year-old Jena man.

According to the Jena Police Department, Gary Norris of Nebo was knocked unconscious by Stacey V. Floyd after Floyd allegedly punched Norris in the side of his head at the front outside entrance of Homeland Bank located on South First Street.

Jena Assistant Chief of Police David Smith noted that witnesses of the incident, which occurred around 12:25 p.m. October 19, said that Norris was attempting to enter the bank when Floyd allegedly ran up to him and punched him in the side of his head.

“According to witnesses, the strike caused Norris to fall to the ground unconscious and hit his head on the concrete,” Smith stated.

The fall and contact with the concrete also caused a significant laceration on Norris’ forehead, according to the police report.

Witnesses reported that Floyd then left the scene as police and ambulance personnel were called.

Norris was treated at the scene and then transported to LaSalle General Hospital where he was released later than day.

Also later that day, Floyd went to the Jena Police Department where he allegedly told officers he was there to “turn himself in.”

He was arrested by the Jena Police and charged with one count of second-degree battery.

He was then transported to the LaSalle Parish Jail where he remained over the weekend awaiting bond to be set Monday in the 28th Judicial District Court. That bond hearing information was unavailable as of press time Monday.

Smith said that the incident is still under investigation.
