4-H Youth Heat Up The Kitchen

LaSalle 4-H members turned out with dishes in hand for the Fall Cookery Contest held October 17, 2023, at the 4-H Office in Jena.

Members showcased their favorite dishes in either rice, egg, or competed in the brownie bash challenge. First through third places all received handy kitchen equipment and will receive an invitation to the Outstanding Member’s Banquet at the end of the year. Additionally, the first and second place winners in the egg and rice divisions qualify for the 4-H Central Region Cookery contest in the spring. Overall, 11 youth participated in the fall cookery serving up 27 dishes. Cookery competitions through 4-H provide a means for youth to apply food preparation and safety skills as well as time spent with a caring adult in the kitchen.

In addition to the cookery contest, LaSalle 4-H Jr. Leaders led group activities for the participants. Working in groups, 4-H members followed recipe instructions and practiced their mixing and flipping techniques to create pumpkin pancakes.
