Qualifying is underway in LaSalle Parish for several positions, beginning today, Dec. 13th and continuing until Friday, Dec. 15th, at the LaSalle Parish Clerk of Court’s Office in Jena.
The first is for the LaSalle Parish Police Jury District 5 Juror seat that was vacated with the unfortunate death of June Fowler in November.
Those wishing to qualify for this seat must be voting residents of District 5. Qualifying fees are $172.50 for Democrats and Republicans and $115.00 for Independents.
The election for this seat will be held March 23, 2024.
The second qualifying is for the Democrat and Republican parties’ LaSalle Executive Committee.
Each of LaSalle’s ten districts are allowed one person of each party to serve on the LaSalle Executive Committee (LEC). Should two or more individuals from the same district qualify, an election will be held to determine who will fill the position.
The LEC is comprised of ten members of the Democratic Party and ten members of the Republican Party. In addition, the Governor appoints one member from each party to serve as an At-Large Member, making the combined total of 22 members.
Currently, LEC’s committee only has three members, Katherine Roberts, Jamie Brock and Blake Phillips, all Republicans.
“We are hoping that many will make the decision to qualify and join the LaSalle Executive Committee,” longtime member Katherine Roberts stated. “We really need more members. There is much we want to do and having more members will allow us to be more proactive in our election processes.”
Finally, the last qualifying is for the Louisiana State Central Committee. This committee is comprised of Democrats and Republicans from every parish who sit on the state committee to help oversee state elections.
Four positions are open to LaSalle residents in the Democrat Party and two seats are open for the Republican Party.
Qualifying fees for the party positions are $75 for the LaSalle Parish Executive Committee and $112.50 for the Louisiana State Central Committee.
