The Lady Giants played a couple more district games last week and, in the process, picked up two big wins.
On Tuesday, January 30, the Lady Giants welcomed the Caldwell Lady Spartans to town. The Lady Giants came into the week looking to improve their power ranking and give themselves a chance at a home playoff game in the first round of the playoffs. Jena and Caldwell both were ranked around the same spot in the power rankings, so a win for either team would be big going forward.
The Lady Giants would control this game throughout as they took a 10-8 lead into the 2nd quarter and then outscored Caldwell 14-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 24-13 lead into halftime. Jewellia Champlin would lead the Lady Giants with 6 first half points.
In the second half Caldwell would make a comeback as they would outscore Jena 15-10 in the 2nd half but the Lady Giants would hold on to get the 34-28 win. In the game for the Lady Giants Elyssa Brinson had 10 points, Jewellia Champlin had 7 points, Triniti Williams had 7 points, Baylee Burlew had 4 points, Kaylee Kemp had 2 points, Noel Kimbrough had 2 points, and Braylie Poole had 2 points. With the win, the Lady Giants improved to 9-12 overall and 2-4 in district play.
On Friday night, February 2, the Lady Giants traveled to Bolton to take on the Lady Bears. In the first matchup between these two teams, Jena would take a lead into halftime but Bolton would come back to win 41-27. This time the Lady Giants would once again take a 19-16 lead into halftime. Baylee Burlew would lead the Lady Giants with 5 first half points.
In the 3rd quarter though, it would look like Bolton would make another comeback as they would outscore Jena 18-8 in the quarter to take a 34-27 lead into the 4th quarter.
However, in the 4th quarter, the Lady Giants would come out on fire as Triniti Williams would score 11 points in the quarter, Kaylee Kemp would knock down a big time 3 point shot and Ava Francis would make two clutch free throws late to propel the Lady Giants to a 48-45 victory.
In the game for the Lady Giants Triniti Williams had 17 points, Baylee Burlew had 9 points, Kaylee Kemp had 6 points, Elyssa Brinson had 5 points, Ava Francis had 5 points, Jewellia Champlin had 4 points, and Braylie Poole had 2 points. With the win the Lady Giants are now 10-12 overall and 3-4 in district play.
The Lady Giants have now given themselves a chance to earn a home playoff game in the first round of the playoffs. The Lady Giants will have three games this week as they will play at Marksville on Tuesday, at home against Buckeye on Friday and at Caldwell on Saturday. All three games are winnable games for the Lady Giants and every win helps in getting a better playoff seed.
Friday night will be senior night so everyone come on out and cheer on the Lady Giants and support these seniors.
