In an era where the future of agriculture is of paramount importance to both local communities and the global stage, the LaSalle Conservation District in Louisiana has taken a proactive step in shaping the next generation of agriculturalists. Their Career Day event is a testament to this commitment, with a clear goal to display the breadth of opportunities within the local community to high school students fascinated by the agricultural sector.
Caitlin Joubert from the Office of Soil and Water Conservation Districts talked to students about soil health and the importance of it in our everyday lives. She explained many NRCS soil health practices for sustainable agriculture. It was the La-Salle District’s hope that when these young farmers start out on their own that they will remember this and take advantage of soil health practices that are part of NRCS programs.
This year’s event was a resounding success, with 113 students and seven industry representatives from various backgrounds, including federal and state conservation agencies, and privately owned local agriculture companies, held on March 8 at the Jena Community Center. The diversity of employers not only enriched the experience but also broadened the students’ perspectives on the various paths they could take within the field of agriculture. Students were taught the importance of soil health practices such as cover crops and no till drill.
One highlight of the event was the transparency with which employers shared details about their professional lives. At times, they even discussed their pay scales, providing students with a realistic preview of what they could expect in their professional futures.
As attendees departed, they took with them not only the knowledge and advice of the day’s exchanges but also the potential for hands-on experience in the field.
The Career Day has sown the seeds for a well-informed, skilled workforce that will continue to nurture the land and uphold the traditions of agriculture in Louisiana. With the event’s continued success, the LaSalle Conservation District is cultivating a fertile future for both its youth and its agricultural heritage. By bringing together eager students and experienced professionals, the district is ensuring that the future of local agriculture is bright, sustainable, and in capable hands.
LaSalle Conservation District would like to thank the agriculture teachers from Jena High School and LaSalle High School for their attendance. LaSalle Parish School Board Superintendent, Mr. Jon Garrett, was in attendance as well. Mr. Garrett gave closing remarks to the students before their departure. It is exciting to see the parish school superintendent involved and in support of the annual Agricultural Career Day.
