I knew it would happen. But I hoped that it would not happen to me. What you ask? Age! And age causes your memory to go bad. It is kind of like a joke I heard. It goes like this. There are three signs of old age. One is you lose your memory, and I can’t remember the other two.

I was painfully aware of this truth this past week. Things were going well in the first part of the week. On short notice, Lisa and I decided to go to Cameron’s on Wednesday and return on Saturday.
I had to work Wednesday morning, so I rushed in about lunch and began to throw things into my bag. I made sure my medicine planner was full of pills and the needles I needed for the daily shot I take.
I start getting ready for bed. One of the last things I do is take my hearing-aids off and put them on the charger. That’s when I realized I had left my charger at home. The newly improved hearing-aid has no replaceable battery. I couldn’t run to the CVS on the next block and pick up a set as with my old set. This meant for the next three days I had to endure Lisa either talking so soft I could not hear her or hollering for three days.
But that is not all. It gets worse. In my care for diabetes, every morning I take two pills and a shot. The shot is a drug called Xultophy. It is a combination of two drugs, insulin degludec and liraglutide. It is administered through a pen that gives me the ability to set the correct dosage.
You guess it. I went to take my morning meds. I had my needle, but no pen. This medication has been a world changer for me in the ability to control my diabetes. This meant three days of constant watch on my blood sugar by constantly eating the right foods in small portions.
As I have had a couple of days to think about this episode in my life, there are several truths that come to mind. The first truth is that the loss of memory is a natural thing with age. And the second truth is that next month I will be 70 years old.
The next two are the most important and they concern our memory with God. I was reminded of the importance of always remembering God and submit to Him in everything we do. Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways submit to (remember) Him And he will make your paths straight.: Also, we need to remember the faithfulness of God toward us. Psalms 36:5: “Your love, Lord reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies” Oh, my friend how easy and often we forget these two things. Maybe it’s time for a memory check with God.
