Lady Giants: Undefeated District Champions

The Lady Giants played four more games this past week, winning them all while also capturing the District 2-3A Championship.

On Monday, March 31, the Lady Giants would have senior night as they would honor senior third basemen Haylee Dangerfield. The Lady Giants would play Avoyelles Charter on senior night in a non-district matchup. The ladies would take care of business with a 13-2 victory. Callie Decker would lead the Lady Giants with 3 hits including a double, a homerun, and 4 RBIs. Hallie Poole would also hit a 2-run homerun in the game. Rylee Masters would pick up the win allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts in 5 innings.

On Tuesday, April 1, the Sterlington Lady Panthers would come to town in a big Division III Non-Select game. Sterlington has ended the Lady Giants season the last two years in the semifinals of the playoffs. Last year, Sterlington would win the state championship and would return most of their lineup for this season. Jena came into the game ranked #3 while Sterlington came in ranked #5 in the power rankings. It would be one of the biggest games in the state.

Sterlington would score in the top of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead. That would be the score going into the bottom of the 3rd inning when Bailey Durham would lead off the inning with a double to right centerfield. The very next batter Haylee Dangerfield would give the Lady Giants a 2-1 lead with a line drive 2 run homerun to left field.

In the bottom of the 4th inning Triniti Williams would extend the Lady Giants lead with a 3-run homerun to left field to give the Lady Giants a 7-1 lead.

After the top of the 1st inning, pitcher Kiette Cooper would retire 16 straight hitters before giving up a homerun in the top of the 7th inning to the leadoff hitter. The Lady Giants would go on to win 7-2. Cooper would pick up the win only giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and finishing with 11 strikeouts. Sydney Williams and Callie Decker would also have two hits in the game for the Lady Giants.

On Thursday, April 3, the Lady Giants would travel to Winnsboro to take on Franklin Parish. Once again, the Lady Giants bats would put the game away as Jena would go on to win 12-0. Kiette Cooper would pick up the win as she did not give up a hit in the game and finished with 11 strikeouts. Cooper and Triniti Williams would both have 2 RBI doubles in the game. Autumn Sharp would have a 2 RBI single as well.

On Friday, April 4, the Lady Giants would finish up district play as they played a makeup game with Vidalia that was originally scheduled for earlier in the season but was rained out. The Lady Giants would defeat Vidalia 20-0 to finish district play with a 5-0 record.

Mary Wood drove in 6 runs on 3 hits. The Lady Giants had 19 hits in the game. Rylee Masters picked up the win giving up 2 hits and finishing with 3 strikeouts. The Lady Giants are now 21-5 on the season and are ranked #3 in the Division III Non-Select power rankings.

The Lady Giants still have some big non-district games on the schedule. On Thursday, the Lady Giants will be at Grant. On Friday, the Lady Giants will be at home against one of the best teams in the state in North Desoto. Everyone come out and cheer on the Lady Giants. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
