Harvey Rabbit & Friends Make Learning Fun!

Familiar Favorite Kicks Off The Library’s Summer Reading Program

Both Lasalle Parish libraries were filled with smiles, laughter and fun this past Friday as they kicked off with the first show of this year’s Summer Reading Program. Throughout the summer, the LaSalle Parish Library will host various events and special guests, at both the Jena and Olla locations, to keep parish children and youth involved with reading.

Last week, the first program of the summer featured longtime favorite Harvey Rabbit and Friends. This exciting and hilarious show was led by Tim and Laura Allured and their puppet friends, Harvey Rabbit, It-In-The-Box, Cecil the Orangutan and T-Boy the Alligator. Each one of these puppet friends came with their own unique personality and comical role in the show receiving many laughs in return from the children.

The show also featured special guest star Presley Humphries who was picked from the crowd to play the role of a princess and to help Harvey Rabbit and Mr. Tim with a magic act. Along with comedy and magic the children also enjoyed music and dancing during the program!

This Friday, June 6, the Summer Reading Program will continue with The Dinosaur Experience, where first-time guests Nash and his trainer will have the whole family smiling in no time! The Dinosaur Experience will start at 10 a.m. at the Jena Library and visit the Olla location at 2 p.m. Others scheduled to appear this summer include Johnette Downing, Author M.L. Tarpley, Pair-A-Docs and Ms. Brayden Keene.

During the month of June, all Friday programs and special entertainers are provided in collaboration with the McKinney Vento’s Federal Grant through the LaSalle Parish School Board. Children of all ages are invited to attend each Summer Reading Program event, and all programs are free of charge.

In addition to the Story Hour programs, the LaSalle Parish Library is encouraging children to read this summer by offering special prizes, including gift certificates, for children who read the most this summer.

Special sheets are provided to children where parents and guardians can mark how many minutes their children read during the summer. Grand prizes will be awarded during end of the year school events to those who log the most minutes The winners of last year’s summer reading program were – Doc Howard (Fellowship Elementary), Luke Adams (Jena Elementary), Karla Spears (Jena Elementary) Cooper Robin (Olla-Standard Elementary) and Kaitlynn Rison (Good Pine Middle).

For more information, please contact the LaSalle Parish Library at (318) 992-5675, visit them on Facebook at LaSalle Parish Library, or at www.lasalle.lib.la.us.
