For the first time in over two months, children of all ages were up early this morning as the official first day of school was today, Wednesday, August 6.
Students attending Temple Christian Academy began their new school year Tuesday, August 5. The private, Christian school located in Jena will follow the parish school system’s calendar for the most part, including operating on a four-day school week, Tuesday-Friday.
LaSalle Parish School System personnel, along with Temple Christian Academy personnel, have been busy the past two weeks preparing for today and last Friday, Monday and Tuesday, in-service meetings were held in preparation for the start of school.
Teachers have been busy preparing their classrooms, bus drivers their buses, cafeteria workers their lunchrooms and administrators and supervisors coordinating it all as the start of a new school year was anticipated.
All of the parish schools have had some type of improvements made over the summer as the LPSB continues to maintain and improve its buildings and infrastructure.
As teachers and students settle into their normal school routines, all eyes are on the start of football season. The unofficial start of the season begins with the football jamborees at the end of this month.
The LaSalle High School Tigers will play their jamboree on Friday, August 29 and the Jena High School Giants will play their jamboree on Saturday, August 30.
Once the season begins, the first holiday for the schools will be for their homecomings. LHS will host theirs first on October 3 followed by JHS on October 17.
The first official break from classes will be for the Thanksgiving holiday when school will be dismissed November 2528. The Christmas/ New Years break will be held December 23, 2025 through January 2, 2026.
LaSalle Parish Sheriff Lane Windham stressed the importance of all drivers to be extra careful with the start of school, especially during the early morning prior to school starting and the afternoon when school is dismissed.
“Please pay extra attention while driving, especially during those times,” the Sheriff said. “Also, slow down in school zones and be mindful of children loading and unloading from school buses all throughout our parish. Nothing is more precious than our children and our deputies will be watching for careless driving around school buses and in school zones.”
