Tales on the Trail was held once again Saturday, October 11, with many children attending the literacy event held in the Jena High School main gymnasium.
The event featured many activity stations where children ages 0-8 participated in literary oriented projects to earn stickers which would later be used to redeem free books.
Event organizer Dr. Debra Jo Hailey of Jena, noted the event was a great success despite so much occurring across the parish on Saturday.
The community collaboration was made possible through contributions of time and funding from the LaSalle Parish Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Jena High School, Northwestern State University, the Louisiana Department of Health and the Louisiana Early Childhood Association.
Many literacy skills were learned through fun games, storytelling, art and many hands-on activities. Several of the activities allowed the children to take home items they created.
In addition, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library was part of the event, allowing children to sign up for the program which allows them to receive a book-per-month.
Every child who attended went home with a free book, some with several.
Hailey thanked everyone who participated and made the event such a great success.
