Giants Stay Upbeaten in District Play

The Jena Giants played two more games this past week, getting two more wins to improve their overall record and stay unbeaten in District 2-3A play.

The Giants are currently ranked #7 in the Division III Non-Select power rankings and are looking to stay in the Top 10. They were on the road for both games this past week.

On Monday night, January 12, the Giants traveled to Avoyelles Charter, a team that made it to the state championship in Class B and finished as runner-up last year. Despite their impressive season last year, the Giants would dominate the game, picking up a 55-34 win.

Zadrien Cooper would have a big game for the Giants as he finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

On Friday night, January 16, the Giants would travel to Alexandria to take on the Bolton Bears in another District 2-3A matchup. The Giants led throughout this one taking a 34-17 lead into halftime and would leave Alexandria with another impressive victory, defeating Bolton by the final score of 68-41.

Zac Brown led the Giants with 17 points. Zadrien Cooper finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Xavier Brown also had 10 points in the game.

The Giants have played very well even though they got a late start on the season due to many of the staters are also football players who didn’t join the basketball team until the middle of December.

They are 8-2 on the season, 2-0 in district play and currently ranked #8 in the Division III Non-Select power rankings. But the schedule is about to get tougher with some big home games coming up, starting this Friday night, January 23, as the Bunkie Panthers come to town.
