Giants Shutout Hackberry for Win

The Jena Giants baseball team, while struggling some with a young team, has still managed to post a 10-9 overall record, obtained a #15 ranking in Div. III Non-Select and picked up a big win last week as the season continues.

The Jena Giants opened up district play last week as they traveled to Caldwell on Tuesday, March 10, to take on the Spartans. Caldwell would use a big first inning to jump out to a big lead and go on to win 10-1.

In the game for Jena, Jonas Jenkins finished 3-4 and Carson Willis had two hits as well.

On Friday, March 13, the Giants made the long trip down to Hackberry to take on the Mustangs. The Giants would get homeruns from Jonas Jenkins and Collin Jensen in the game. Jensen would also pitch a complete game shutout to pick up the 8-0 win. Jensen only allowed two hits in the game. Elijah Gemar and Carson Willis both had two hits each in the game.

On Saturday, March 14, the Giants traveled to St. Edmund to take on one of the top teams in Division IV Select. It would be a battle throughout as Jena would score first on an RBI single by Trent Tingle.

St. Edmund would take a 3-1 lead in the 3rd inning and the Giants would battle back to tie it at 3 in the 6th inning. St. Edmund would go on to win 6-4 but this would be good experience for the young Giants going forward.

Freshman Quinton Otwell pitched 4.2 innings and finished with 3 strikeouts. Trent Tingle and Collin Jensen had 2 RBIs each in the game.

The Giants are now 10-9 on the season and are still sitting in a good spot in the power rankings to make the playoffs.

On Tuesday of this week, March 17, the Giants traveled to Bunkie for their second district opponent and will host Delhi Charter in Jena on Thursday, March 19, with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.

On Saturday, March 21, the Giants will be at Cedar Creek and the on Monday, March 23, the Giants will travel to Ferriday to take on Delta Charter. On Tuesday, March 24, they will travel to Vidalia to take on the Vikings for another district game.

If you can’t make it to district games, you can tune in to 102.7 KJNAFM to hear all of the live action starting at 6:00 p.m. If you are not in the listening area then you can download the MIXLR app and search for KJNAFM or go online at www. mixlr.com/kjnafm.
