Friday’s season kickoff between Block and Ringgold turned into anything but a quick night at the stadium in Jonesville. Rain and repeated lightning delays pushed the game deep into the evening before it finally reached its conclusion — a 22–16 loss for the Bears.
For most of the contest, Block matched Ringgold blow for blow, keeping the deficit at just two points, 16–14, heading into the fourth quarter.
Ringgold answered with a late score to go up 22–16, and Block responded by driving deep into Ringgold territory in the game’s final moments. The Bears reached the doorstep of the end zone before the clock ran out, ending the comeback bid just short.
The result drops Block to 0–1, but the effort has drawn attention around the program for reasons beyond the scoreboard. Coaches and supporters point to the work put in long before Friday’s kickoff, which included players and families pitching in on everything from fundraising to field maintenance, fence repair, tree trimming, and getting the concession stand ready for the season. That preparation, the thinking goes, is what showed up in the way Block competed deep into a delayed, rain-soaked opener.
One season down the road, zero games are won yet, but if the opener was any indication, Block isn’t short on fight.
The Bears will travel to Lincoln Prep in Grambling Thursday night, September 10, for another non-district game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
