Tiny Birds – Colossal Journey: The Great Hummingbird Migration

September and October are the months each fall when thousands of beautiful hummingbirds across certain parts of North America — including those in Louisiana — begin their annual migration to Mexico and Central America in search of a warmer climate. Following the same routes as their ancestors, local ruby-throated males are the first to leave Central Louisiana, with females, migrants and juveniles following later. The colossal journey is arduous but necessary for the species' survival and well-being. The official departure date was Sept. 15, but hummers leave in waves, not all at once, and many are still preparing to begin the long flight south.
