Students at most LaSalle Parish schools gathered around their campus flagpoles Wednesday morning, Sept. 23, to read scripture, sing and pray as part of the nationwide See You at the Pole event.
See You at the Pole is a student-initiated, student-organized and student-led prayer rally in which participants meet at their school flagpole before classes begin to pray for friends, families, teachers, schools and the nation.
The movement began in 1990 in Burleson, Texas, when a small group of teenagers felt led to pray for their schools and communities. It has since grown to include more than 2 million students in all 50 states and more than 20 other countries, according to organizers.
This year’s event, the 36th, carried the theme “Come to Me,” drawn from Matthew 11:28.
LaSalle Parish schools have participated for many years, and community members and churches often attend to encourage the students.
Turnout was noticeably larger this year, with a spiritual revival held earlier in the week contributing to higher student attendance and participation. Because the gatherings are student led, the focus remained on prayer, with students taking turns reading scripture, leading songs and praying aloud before heading to class.
