Former Centennial Cultural Center (CCC) President Fern McKeithen points out a kerosene lamp while dressed in old style clothing for a visit last week from Good Pine Middle School third grade students to the CCC in Olla. McKeithen told the students stories about traditions and daily life of the “old days” such as using the lamp as their light source at night, sharecropping, cooking over a wood-burning stove and about Mawmaw Nelly. McKeithen said she likes to portray Mawmaw Nelly, who was her mother-in-law, and she loves that the kids respond to it the way they do. “We want to teach them to be thankful and to learn a good work ethic. We’ve been doing the day of Mawmaw Nelly storytelling for well over a decade for our area students,” McKeithen said. “Everything we do at the center has a purpose. My heart is for young people and this is all about them growing and making good decisions.” GPMS fourth grade students as well as students from Olla Elementary and Nebo Elementary also attended the special event at the CCC on other days.
