Prescribed Burning School
The Louisiana Ecological Forestry Center (LEAF), the S.W. La Forestry Association, the LSU AgCenter, the La Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) and the La Department of Wildlife & Fisheries (LDWF) will have a school to enable forest landowners to burn their lands safely and legally.
The school will be held April 28-30, 2022 – Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
Topics will include fuels, burning techniques, proper tools, optimal weather conditions, smoke management, liability management, planning, fire behavior and more. The training will begin the process of becoming a Louisiana Certified Burn Manager.
The completion of five prescribed fires and their documentation will complete the process. The cost is $100. Class size is limited to the first 25 applicants. Please make the check payable to SW LA Forestry Association and send to LSU AgCenter, P.O. Box 609, DeRidder, La 70634.

4-H members in grades 4th to 6th are invited to join the Junior Leaders and embark on a Wildlife Workshop set for Tuesday, February 22. Come join in to explore an owl’s diet, age deer on the hoof and more. Members will build a shelter for bird friends. Pizza will be served! Jena Dixie Youth Baseball Registration for ages 3 to 12 (child’s age by May 1st) is open online until February 12 and in-person registration will be on Saturday, February 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the boys ballpark.

Fundraiser for Kidney Disease
In conjunction with Kidney Disease Awareness Month, a fundraiser for kidney transplant/disease emergency fund is being planned for downtown Olla on Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Food and craft vendors are needed for the events. There will be a $20 fee for booth space with no electricity and a $35 fee for booth space with electricity. A donation is recommended but not required for the event. Sharpen your leadership, marketing, money and management skills as you compete with your team to build and manage your cooperative business at this year’s Cooperative Enterprise Teen Leadership Conference set for March 24-26.
Come learn with other 8-12 grade 4-Hers from across the state to organize your own co-operative business while enjoying the scenery at the Wesley Center in Woodworth.
Co-op Camp is designed for youth to share and learn techniques and resources from professionals working in cooperative forms of business. Top campers will receive the 4-H Educational Trip this summer and cash awards.
The cost of the camp is only $50 thanks to the Louisiana Cooperative’s Association. (Note: the fee is non-refundable.)
