In the year 1989 the powerhouse Soviet Union crumbled. Independent states, including Ukraine, used their newfound and hard-fought freedoms to separate from the Soviet Union. The fall of the Berlin Wall that same year brought about many changes in Communist countries in the region and it was the beginning of the end of the Cold War and the Soviet Union.
